My 2006 Jeep Liberty CRD..Diesel..has a whine in the read end when I de-accelerate. If I take the auto transmission out of gear the whine stops. A transmission guy says this is not an issue. What would cause this, is it a problem, and would would this be repaired.

It should be repaired! The noise is trying to tell you something!
Need to check pinion and carrier bearings for wear! Letting off the go pedal is slightly changing the backlash or gear mesh of the ring and pinion gears due to possible excessive bearing clearance.
The pinion bearings movement can be checked by jacking up rear end, transmission in neutral, and manually feel the pinion input shaft for any excess movement. A leaking pinion seal can be a sure sign of too much play!
Carrier bearings must be inspected by opening up the rear differential and inspecting individually.

A good transmission shop should be able to open up and inspect the differential, find the problem, and give you an estimate for repairs....

Best of luck!
