Thanks WWDiesel,

I have considered the Cam Position Sensor connector being switched with Fuel Injector #4. The video that I offered a link to in my last post suggested these being switched as a possibility of no starting. Using the Ohm meter I can determine if these are switched. However, I recall checking that before ordering the ECM.

Dean.

For anyone that wants it, here is a schematic drawing of the Fuel Regulation sensors all on one page. Enjoy.

Went through the engine checking all points on my latest drawing (previous post) and found nothing wrong. At the last few minutes, I checked how much fuel is leaking through the Fuel Pressure Solenoid valve (3) and got a surprise.

If I understand the Fuel Pressure Solenoid valve (3) correctly, it has two functions: 1) Prevent fuel from leaking out of the fuel rail (6) during cranking by energizing the solenoid to close the valve tight. 2) Regulate fuel pressure while running by allowing spring pressure to regulate fuel pressure while running.
Image

Put a clear hose on the Fuel Pressure Solenoid Valve output (4) to measure the amount of fuel bypassing during cranking. Cranked for 10 seconds and about 1 teaspoon of fuel leaked into the clear hose. After cranking, the fuel leaked back down the clear hose into the fuel rail (6) again. That seemed wrong on both counts.

Checked the voltage on the Fuel Pressure Sensor (8) and measured 0.5VDC with the key on. The voltage increased to 0.7VDC while cranking. For a sensor that probably has an output ranging from 0.5v to 5.0v, the 0.7v reading is probably showing that the Pressure Sensor is working; having only a small amount of pressure.

Good drawing Dean on the sensors, would it be of any help to have the wire color codes included for each sensor?
And, the MAF sensor will not affect starting or running as it is only used for EGR operation. It can be unplugged and the engine will not care other than setting a DTC.

Thanks for the feedback. That gave me the chance to include the fuel injectors in the drawing.

IT'S ALIVE ! :frankie: IT'S ALIIIVVVEEE !!!

Swapped out the fuel rail with included Fuel Pressure sensor and Fuel Pressure solenoid. Turns out I've had the *other* CRD engine's fuel rail, so this means my original one is back on.
Fired right up!

Drove it up and down my street a couple times, then around the block 3 times. Never skipped a beat.

So, I'm enjoying a celebratory Spiced Rum.

I'm not going to touch anything under the hood anymore unless I have to. Fuel / Water Separator excluded.

Great News!!!
Glad you got it figured out!
So was it the fuel pressure sensor or solenoid? Or do you even know?
My money is on the solenoid.

The evidence points toward the Fuel Pressure solenoid that was leaking fuel during cranking. I think it was leaking all the time and never allowing pressure to build in the fuel rail.

Thanks for the kudos turblediesel !

I'm glad too! Gave it a bath and took out all the stuff that had accumulated in the seats and cargo area.

Still have a few incidentals to clear up: License & registration, low tire light, anti-skid light (bleed brakes), engine light (delete EGR). Small stuff.

Found an oil leak ! Dripping from the edge of the oil pan. Traced the floe (lava style floe) from a plug on the right-front corner of the engine's oil galley. I never tightened it completely during assembly. Fortunately it was accessible from the underside and just enough room to get a 22mm socket, 3" extension and 1/2" drive ratchet handle on it. I was fearing that I would have to disassemble the front the front of the engine to fix it. Oil leak stopped without taking anything off. Whew.

(1) Vacuum pump. (2) Crankshaft gear. (3) Oil pump.

If you want to add an oil pressure hose or sender, this is the place. I'll have to measure the plug size and thread pitch.

Drove the beast to work today. Made it to work but coming home was problematic. Changed the fuel filter and made it home.

What is a good fuel system cleaner that I can pump through the tank and fuel lines. All of the cleaners I saw are fuel additives. I plan to polish the fuel and system by pumping something through an external filter. Any suggestions?

Dean.

I've read in the past that biodiesel can be a good system cleaner.
Personally, I add a quart of a mixture of Power Service Diesel Kleen + Cetane Boost Fuel Additive mixed with non-synthetic 2 cycle oil and Marvel Mystery Oil at every fill up.
Diesel Kleen +Cetane Boost is a total injector cleaner and performance improver that cleans injectors, boosts cetane and lubricates fuel injection components.

Are you having a bio contamination issue? If so use, Bio Kleen Diesel Fuel Biocide by Power Service
https://powerservice.com › Products
Bio Kleen Diesel Fuel Biocide is a dual-phase biocide that kills microbes in diesel fuel, including bacteria and fungus

Thanks WWDiesel,

That's quite a cocktail you give your Liberty with every meal. I have a collection of diesel additive goodies I can add and swirl them through the tank and fuel lines with a pump & filter. They've been around the garage so I may as well get some use out of them.

Next time I fire the ol' gal it should spew some glorious green and pink smoke.

Dean.

before you get too excited Dean. Cut the old filter open & see what is blocking it.
If its all black, its bugs. That is what I suspect it will be.
You will need to add a good quality biocide for a while.
I have had issues with varnish. Junk fuel. atf is another good additive.

layback40,

I watched a few videos on polishing fuel and one of them described the algae in fuel as bugs. I might still have the old filter set aside. Thanks for the advise.

Ordered a Racor-style fuel-water separator that should be here Friday (tomorrow). This will be just in time for the weekend to begin polishing my fuel and cleaning my tank and lines. For the first use, I'll mount the filter/separator and a 115vac pump on a piece of wood and circulate the fuel through the system.

Also plan to empty the fuel tank into a 26-gallon plastic barrel, then remove the tank. I've got 2 internal fuel pumps that should fit, although they are actually made for gasoline.

Does anyone know what the difference is between the gasoline and diesel model fuel pumps? I can see they are made of different color materials. Any comments?

Dean.
