My 17 year old self only had access to porn in magazines. If I had online access I'd have one huge arm and one small one.

Regarding the Liberty, I'm having a time related setback. I got the opportunity to teach the maritime Captain's class again so I grabbed it. Work during the day and 4-hr classes at night are keeping me too busy. Fortunately the class only lasts a month. 2nd week in March and I can get back to work on the engine.

I'm baaack !!

Finished teaching the Captain's course (1 month) and got over a cold (another 10 days). Today is my 65th birthday so I celebrated by digging back into the VM Motori engine.

Attempted to get the crankshaft and crankshaft supports out. The most under rated phrase in the Jeep Service Guide is "...slide the crankshaft out through the back of the engine..." In the words of Hitler, "...Bolshevik!!"

I first tried lifting the crank out with the shop crane. Bolshevik.
Then tried pounding with a rubber mallet on the front of the crankshaft. Bolshevik.
Tried installing the old front crankshaft bolt and whacking with a 2-pound mall. Bolshevik.
Used a brass drift to knock loose the crankshaft supports and at least saw some movement, but otherwise... Bolshevik.
I envisioned hanging the engine from the shop crane and dropping it on the front crank shaft bolt, but I didn't do it.

I like Mango, lets call it Mango yellow. The can came from the mainland, it just said Yellow.

It's been raining cats & dogs here so my progress has been slowed, but not stopped. I constructed a crankshaft puller from parts laying around at work. Two pieces of scrap metal, some 5/8"x13 All-Thread, and an 8" PVC schedule 40 pipe slip coupling. So far no joy though.

It seems I'm going to have to heat the block to expand it to let go of the crank supports. Possibly just waiting until summer may do the same thing.

Finally got the cylinder head back from the machinist. It's been 4 months.

Here in the islands you take what is offered. This machinist is good but his body is bad. He grew up in his father's automotive machine shop and took it over after his death. He runs a 1-man shop and never turns out bad machine work; however his body is out of control at probably 400 pounds. Lately one leg is swelling so it hardly fits in his jeans. It's sad, but he will probably not live much longer. Certainly he will not run his business much longer.

The last part from VM Diesel Specialists arrived today, the oil cooler gasket. I was supposed to arrive with the initial full gasket set but was left out. Contacted them via email and they immediately mailed a replacement. Two months later still no oil cooler gasket. Contacted them again and they immediately sent out another one. Took about 5 weeks through the British and US postal systems.

Finally got a sunny day and a chance to solar heat the engine block. It worked great with about 2 hours of warming expanded the block enough to pull the crankshaft and supports out. Here are some pictures in order of progress.

1. Solar heating the engine from both sides.

2. Starting the pull but bent the angle iron puller.

3. Pulled as far as possible with basic puller. Added short extension. (8" PVC Schedule 40 coupling)

Finally assembled the head. Dropped one valve keeper but found it (whew) and finished the assembly.

Ran a piece of Plastigage between the main journal and the bearing. It reported 0.051mm which is good. I'll torque it all down soon as I come back from the auto parts store with some thread locker "blue".

For those who are curious about the volcanic eruptions on the Big Island Hawaii, here is an article with an audio and a video summing up the status. Since this article was made (yesterday) there have been two more fissure breakouts which bring the total to 9. The eruptions are all within the housing subdivision Leilani Estates. Can you imagine lava coming up in your backyard or front yard or directly under your house? These are mostly 3-acre parcels zoned agricultural with residences. Nine homes have been destroyed by Madam Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of the volcano and lava.

I'm not certain what made it so difficult to extract. My theory is that my engine was built on a hot day in Italy and I am working on it in cooler weather. There was a certain amount of varnish and soot-goo throughout the engine, fuel side and lubrication side.

Finally getting something done although I'm not to the downward slope of the job. Took this week off work to get the beast back together but things are not going as straight forward as I had hoped.

Got four cylinder liners in after taking four out. The two middle ones are new. They also had a goodly amount of soot-goo buildup but they finally cleaned up nicely. Going together was another new experience. Placed each sleeve in place without seals (3 o-rings) and they all felt fine. Putting them in with seals was different. At the bottom sealing area was a buildup of soot-goo that made them difficult to install. After cleaning the 'approach' to the bottom seal, the rest went in easier.

The book calls for a special part to hold the cylinder sleeves in-place during re-assembly of the lower end. A bolt and washer does the same job for 1/100th the price.

Assembled the crankshaft/supports assembly but wasn't happy with the feel of the new bearings. Not all the bearings fit properly so I modified them to fit. Had to file 1mm of the end of one bearing so each end was flush with the bearing cap. Long story short, it didn't feel right after reassembly.

One new bearing felt good, but two did not. So, I used two pairs of the old bearings and now all three feel right.

Today I was waiting for the sun to come out but it only showed itself for 10 minutes. This was in hopes of warming the block on both sides (direct sunshine on one side, reflected sunshine on the other) to thermally expand the crankshaft bore. The crankshaft/support assembly are in the freezer awaiting installation.

Tomorrow should be a better day.

In the end, my wife got in the mood for an early afternoon Martini - and that sounded good to me. When it comes to Martinis, I am the one with round heels.

Finally making some god progress. Had some sun this morning and warmed the block prior to installing the crankshaft and supports assembly. Here are some pictures...

Warming the engine with the tropical sun. Using direct sunshine and concentrated light was able to get the beast up to 119F. Had to turn the engine to get both sides equalized.

Concentrating the tropical sun. The backside got 5-degrees F warmer than the direct sun side.

Took a little finagling to get it aligned the first step, but afterward it started pulling in nicely.

Got the crankshaft 2/3's of the way in. Seems like helping a small yellow cow give birth to a breach calf in reverse.

Nearing the final pull, made sure all the alignment pin holes for the balance shaft were in place.

Final pull of the crankshaft. As it neared into the final position, I slowed to ensure not to pass the sweet spot. Using the plastic extension ended up being a wrong move as the plastic structure was giving way.

I'll have to heat it again tomorrow and pull with a metal extension for the last 0.750mm for perfect alignment.

Started at 7 AM Saturday morning. The sun was not clear sunshine, but partially attenuated by light wispy clouds and probably volcanic Vog. Made an attempt anyway to heat the block. By 9:30 AM the clouds came in full obfuscating the sun completely. Had the engine vertically on it's nose and placed ice cubes on the crank supports. Block got to 90F, supports cooled to 48F.

By the luck of the Irish and a few Hail Mary'ies (but spelled differently) the supports moved a tiny bit. Probably only 0.65mm of the 0.75mm I needed, but it was close enough. Pounded the alignment pins into place and they found home.

From here on out, it's only assembling an engine.
