Car failed it’s MOT for handbrake efficiency. Stripped it off and the shoes were down to the metal. Fitted new shoes and adjusted up the star adjusters. Handbrake still woeful. Stripped them off and had another look. I THINK that the mechanism may have seized. Cables are free but this bit seems to be a single solid mass. Is the arm marked supposed to pivot around a mounting pin around where the red circle is. Best way to free this off (assuming that’s my issue)

I will answer my own question. Found this image online and it related to a similar thread. Evidently it should pivot. Anybody advise how I get this out? Cables off and out via the front? Where do I release the cable tension....in the car?

You should be able to simply roll the cable off the end of the pivot lever.
See page 5-34 in the FSM.> http://www.colorado4wheel.com/manuals/J ... Manual.pdf

It says:
"(7) Remove the brake cable(2) from the brake lever
(3). (Fig. 68)"

Nobody is going to convince me that more effort went into making this look like a dog lying down, than actually making a design that worked. Both sides seized absolutely solid. Performed dark muttering ritual along with beating on hammers and a blood sacrifice and got them apart. Handbrake better but still not great. The mechanism just seems to float within the space, held in position by the upper Spring, shoes and backing plate.

I am totally hacked off with this cars ebrake system. Failed mot again as only getting 14% efficiency. That’s with new shoes adjusted up and the levers un-seized And adjusted up for light drag. From what I can make out the handbrake lever itself is self adjusting. I have too much travel and even on full, it doesn’t hold the car. Anybody got any ideas?

Handbrake lever isn't self adjusting in the sense that it will automatically remove extra play; it does pull the left and right e-brake cables equally through a trammel bar.

I pulled the console and adjusted the cables at the trammel bar after adjusting at the wheels to get my lever down to 4-5 clicks and functioning e-brakes.

OK, how do you adjust it???? Only way I could find to tighten it was to press the handbrake button and with a large screwdriver push the metal tab rearward which temporarily took out the slack. It then gradually crept back in. I’ve ordered new discs today to go with the new shoes. Best I can think is the old ones had worn to the point that they exceed the available travel on the handbrake shoes. Will update.

Put the new parts in; pull hard on the parking brake lever a few times to center the new shoes; adjust star wheels until slight drag is felt on both sides; remove console until you can see the threaded ends of each parking brake cable and the end coming from the lever ; tighten the cable end nuts evenly until the lever only goes 4-6 clicks or so and then take it for a drive and do some back-up abrupt braking with the lever for final star-wheel adjustment.

Dredging this up from rusty memory but that's what I did and they work well. I didn't need new shoes because my e-brake was worthlessly loose from the factory.

Fitted new discs today. Seemed promising as I had to screw adjusters down to minimum before new discs would slip over the shoes. Centred the shoes, jacked the rear end up and adjusted till I got light drag. Dropped the car and.......it’s STILL pitiful!!!!!!! Only thing left to replace is the cables however, they seem fine? This is REALLY hacking me off now.

This has got me a little worried because mine are useless and I’m going to need to get an inspection this year. I tried to adjust the cable in the center console as well to no avail.

Might want to look at the cable housing for damage. If they're compromised they'll just scrunch up without passing along the needed force.

I don't know about the tab under the lever you mentioned. I wouldn'tt bother it if everything just loosens up again.

Did you find the threaded cable ends under the console? It took a lot of turns before the lever quit going full travel. Same amount of turns for each side.

I read about some backing plate rivits giving up. Maybe look at the backing plate while someone pulls on the lever.
