Hello all!

2003 Jeep Cherokee/Liberty 2.8 CDR KJ

I noticed my car was spewing a lot more black smoke than usual about 2 months ago... since then I have done the following work on the car;

Installed the Samco hoses.
Changed the air filter
Replaced the fuel filter assembly.
Changed the injectors (all 4 were pretty bad).
Changed the vent valve on top of the engine.
Removed the EGR valve but not the exhaust? cylinder attached to it.

Dont think I have forgotten anything :)

Anyway, since then my turbo has decided to go bad on me (bad screeching noise and white smoke) and I'm still noticing quite a bit of black smoke
when accelerating.... it has only been a few days since i changed the injectors and I'm wondering if the black smoke will reduce in time or when I replace the turbo?
New turbo is arriving next week and honestly I'm praying it will make qa difference... all this has just about ruined me!

Any suggestions or advice will be greatly appreciated!

Elias

A bad turbo would cause low boost issues which in turn will cause low power and produce lots of black smoke which is basically unburned fuel.
Also, have you ever cleaned or replaced the MAP sensor? If not, you might want to try a new one as a bad MAP sensor can cause multiple issues including low boost.
If the turbo "rattling" or going bad as you stated? I would not recommend that you keep driving the vehicle as the risks could be catastrophic. :grim:

Thx a lot for the reply WWdeisel!

I knew I forgot to write something... I actually did clean the MAP sensor :)

So you think my problem could be solved once the new turbo is installed? Ive noticed the black smoke is a bit less now
but there is now also intermittent white smoke so I'm assuming that is from the turbo too.

You asked about what the turbo is doing... it is not rattling but there is a screech/whine coming from it that is getting worse day by day. Is it dangerous to
drive it like this for a few more days??

You are right about the boost, its definitely noticeable (the lack of it i mean)

The occasional white smoke is probably coming from a nearly toasted turbo. Loose shaft eats up the seals pretty quick, and blam. oil finds it's way into the exhaust stream, or intake, or both.
I'd say your symptoms are all turbo related.

'drive a few more days'??? Personally, I wouldn't run it more than to move it a short distance.
Chances of it grenading and loading the whole intercooler and intake with shrapnel are always a possibility, but more probable is running the engine out of oil.. a total seal failure will empty the pan in very short order.

A loose shaft means impellors are getting ground away too. Just because we can't feel the interference when we wiggle it by hand, doesn't mean contact hasn't happened. It's already ate away a little bit. (quite possible the 'screeching' you are hearing) This fine powder doesn't belong in an intake manifold either.

Ok, that scared me enough to let it sit until the new turbo arrives! :)

Thx a lot for the advice and for taking the time to reply!

Use these days by preparing the old turbo for removal; squirting all the mounting hardware with some nut buster. I like Kroil, PB Blaster is good too.
Kroil is harder to find, and more expensive.. PB Blaster can be found even in Walmart.

A very wise decision!

As rancherman stated, get everything soaked up real good with a good penetrating oil.

I went through the exact same thing only to find out my mechanic installed a long screw which punctured a small hole in my plastic air cooler. I patched with J&B plastic weld over a year ago.

Well the turbo has been changed... we started the car for the first time about half an hour ago and
it was spewing white/grey smoke again.
The mechanic said it will need driving a bit for the smoke to clear because there will be oil in the exhaust
from the faulty turbo... is that true??

Quite possibly true.

Even after replacing the Cat and the Muffler, it still took around 10 miles for mine to clean out, and it fogged out every mosquito from Klamath Falls to the California state line.

But it did finally clean up.

Absolutely correct, I'm finally smoke free!!! Took about 20 mins of freeway travel but now im back to the acceptable level of smoke expected from the crd under acceleration :)

Thank you all very much for your advice and input!

My husband said to check for a leak in the intercooler. We had this problem and it went away once we changed the intercooler.

Leaking intercooler hose is a common issue.
