Good morning all, new CRD owner, 2005 Limited and loving it so far. This is also an amazing forum, been here many times to learn more about it.

Doing some routine maintenance that required the removal of the skid plates. I have searched this this forum and google but nothing comes up on my question.

Can I leave the skid plates off, I am a normal city driver, never off road, an occasional dirt road and then the occasional snow here in IA...like this weekend.

thanks in advance,
Rifleman

Many KJs came with out any skid plates at all, so yes you can
But if going on any dirt road, snow etc I would feel better with them, even city streets you never know what may be laying in the road

Wise advice - The skid plates may be a bit of a pain to reinstall but a flying chunk of road debris hitting the underside could ruin your day. :dizzy:

I'm sure you noticed when you took them down, but if I remember mine correctly, each plate had a slotted hole or two allowing them to slide onto the bolts and hang for ease of installation. Have fun, hope your garage is warm!

We are pretty close then, I'm just north of Grimes. Shoot me a PM if you ever need hand with your rig. I know how to hold a flashlight!

I pulled mine off the day after I bought it to do an oil test. And left if off. If your going off road alot or winter driving it would be good but other than putting back cause it came with it is your choice

You guys don't have issues with oil running onto the pan under the filter while doing an oil/filter change?

2006 CRD here, and I always end up with half the contents of the filter on top of the skid.
The really annoying problem with that is that the skid is double layered steel (folded over on itself to make the 2nd layer), and half the oil gets between the 2 layers. Then it takes the next few days to drip out under the Jeep wherever I park it.

I'm thinking of using a small cut-off wheel on my angle grinder to cut a 3" slot in the skid just behind the filter in the hopes that the oil will drain down off the skid through the slot before it runs further back along the skid.

Leaving the Fumoto oil valve open for 1/2 an hour before loosening the filter doesn't purge the filter like it would on the 12 valve Cummins in my '97 Dodge.

I don't know if Jeep gassers are different, but the CRD fails this way.

And I still have to use pliers to give the tab on the Fumoto that 1/4 turn to open the valve.
