Have you done an Italian Tune Up on your 3.7L? Did it help, or did you destroy it? Share your experience. But please omit speculation and caution from the sidelines. I am trying to assemble some real data here from Jeep owners. Thanks. |

I did when I first got my KJ, but that was to make sure it ran well and was strong, not to blow out carbon. I haven't done one since. My 3.7 is still running strong. Modern fuel blends and oil go a long way. The only vehicles I knew that actually benefit from the old "Italian Tune-Up" are ones with carbs or from a time of crappy gas and oil. A can of Seafoam or similar will clear out the carbon without having to dog your engine and driveline at redline. Now for a direct injection gas vehicle motor it might be of some benefit to clean those intake valves since they get no fuel spray. But for a 3.7 that is fuel injected and uses (I assume) decent oil that is changed regularly, then the Italian tune up is pointless. Even short trips aren't a problem since motors warm up fast and use lots of detergents in the oil. This technique is from a bygone era for bygone vehicles. Check Bob Is The Oil Guy (BITOG) forums on Italian tune-ups and things like that. |

Just be careful about cleaning additives on old unknown vehicles. Sometimes that gunk is strategically sealing something up. After I did some Seafoam in my Cherokee the rings got even worse, and I could fill a 10oz oil catch can in about three days with the blow-by. A can of Restore helped a little. |
