Hello everyone,
I have an 05 CRD (242 transfer case)

My rear diff is being rebuilt today with a DTT and 4.10 gearing. I didn't think it would be an issue to drive with the stock 3.73 upfront in 2wd until I swap the front diff. I have a 4.10 front that I am having DTT put in for the front that I planed to install in a couple weeks. The mech doing the work today on the rear diff said he wasn't sure it would be ok to drive in at all not even 2wd.

Wouldn't it be fine to drive in 2wd?

You can have them pull the front driveshaft and you will be fine. Then replace when swapping in the new front diff.

I wouldn't want to rely on "I just won't engage 4 wheel drive" because you never know. Pulling the front driveshaft will guarantee no damage.

On a different note, I've been wanting to regear to 4.10's for some time but can't seem to save up the money before something else comes along. House, life, etc. Splitting the job in half might make it more do-able. How much did you pay for the rear diff vs. the front? The rear seems like a simpler proposition and probably cheaper.

What lfhoward says, to be on the safe side, pull that front driveshaft and you can drive it around for as long as you want without any danger to the transfer case.

" How much did you pay for the rear diff vs. the front? "

I don’t think I can answer that well. My rear needed rebuilt. I try and upgrade when I repair. I had a rebuild, ring/pinion, and carrier swap. The guy is charging me around 500 considering I provide the ring/pinion and Detroit Truetrac. I managed to find the front diff from a stock 4 cyl gas that had 4.10 for only 80 bucks. I am having the same guy check it out and put a DTT up there too. I hate paying someone to work on my Jeep but I don’t fill confident installing the ring and pinion when there is too much to get messed up if I do it wrong. This is the first major thing I have ever paid someone else to do (ever) on a vehicle. Begrudgingly
