So I got my Jeep back today with the rebuilt rear diff, 4.10, and Posi Carrier. The front drive shaft is pulled. It was more than what the guy originally quoted me. I was kind of let down. I was going to have hmm change the front diff carrier but now I can't afford it. I have a complete low mileage differential swap with 4.10 already in. I just need to add the new carrier. It is a DTT.

How tricky is it to swap the front diff carrier? Any good write ups or videos?

Can swap the whole diff in just a few hours , not hard at all
I can swap both front and rear in less than an afternoon with taking breaks and not working hard at all
I can walk you through it if you want

I mean the actual carrier not just the differential. Is that what you were talking about?

The front looks significantly more challenging because it has frame supports: interested myself in a how-to, but it looks like you'd have to remove the bracing, support the front differential and then wrench on it. I don't THINK you have to remove the front diff to get the carrier out, only if you want to put in a spider gear lunchbox locker. Though I could be mistaken, I did see some article about a mushroomed pin holding the carrier together... which is why if you just replace the whole carrier with a TT or locker, you shouldn't have to tear out the entire housing.

The 27 spline Dana 30a, also know by Chrysler as the 186FIA, has always been the only front axle available in the Jeep Liberty. It’s an IFS axle with an aluminum housing as indicated by the ’FI’ and ’A’/’a’ respectively. Essentially, it’s an aluminum version of the Dana 30 with a longer pinion shaft. Unfortunately, the light weight aluminum construction makes it much weaker than the D30 and the longer pinion shaft means pinion related D30 parts won’t fit it

Putting lockers in the weak Dana 30A carrier housing has been known to cause cracks and / or complete failures of the housing especially in the snout area where the pinion bearings are located.

But if you are really serious:
Custom made steel Dana 30 housing for replacing the weak aluminum Dana 30A differential housing.

Apparently, JBA is no longer manufacturing those.

I haven't called to check for myself yet, but it looks like the KJ aftermarket just shrank a little (and in a fairly significant way).

That's sad!

Confirmed via email to jba, steel d30 ifs housing no longer provided due to low volume sales. Sad day indeed.

But question still remains, why does a locker cause more stress than an open diff, especially while off-roading?

Good question, but we know it's not the locker that is the problem, it's the weak aluminum housing that does not handle the additional strain that can be a problem. :banghead:
When turning with larger tires and a locker it can bind up due to the different travel rotational speed of inside versus outside tires that can cause additional stress levels in the critical bearing areas?
The inside and outside tires are basically fighting each other for dominance and the differential housing gets the blunt of the twisting force.
Some just recommend a simple LS up front for a daily driver if you want a little more traction.

This is a good writeup on putting a locker in a IFS:> http://www.fourwheeler.com/how-to/trans ... erentials/

From what I’ve heard, the limited slip in a ifs creates some unwanted effects like slows the wheel return, limits turning radius, and can cause vibration.

Others say it’s fine. IMO auto manufacturers know that a locker in front diff on ifs causes problems so they only put lockers in the rear. Trd Toyota’s and Ford raptors come to mind

The guideline I used was
http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=173

Jeep was almost new so nothing was worn and I have gauges to check positions

I put in front and rear Truetrac's

The front is awesome - works great no problem

rear is a problem - should have gone ARB airlock - with CRD torque - as soon as one side breaks loose all torques transfers to the other side and it spins - the result is every time I accelerate around a corner - I powerslide.

also try searching youtube - I've found great videos there - if I see one I'll add a link

did not see a video - but a couple of writeup's
