I discovered last night that I can shift the shifter without the key in the ignition and with the jeep turned off. Would this be the shift interlock cable?

A previous owner of my '06 had been into the steering column before I owned mine.
I discovered that when I had to go in to replace the ignition interlock because the pin had broken inside the mechanism, and turning the key didn't engage the starter switch.

My steering wheel doesn't lock either, when the key is removed.

The only problem it causes me is that occasionally I leave it in gear (it's an automatic transmission) when I remove the key while parking.

It's really annoying when I get back in to start it and nothing happens until my mental lightbulb lights up and I shift into park.

I'm just glad I usually use the parking brake as habit from driving a clutch, but one of these days I'm going to forget that in a mall parking lot, too.
