I was cleaning up the engine bay and I came across what looks like a trailer connection, since I already have a connector at the tow hitch any idea why this is in the engine bay?

I'd say you need to do some digging, but if I had to guess, that jeep used to be flat towed at some point, and someone made a "suicide" trailer cable.
