Just picked this up at an auction about a week and half ago.. for a 'can't pass that up' price. 04 KJ

I'm not sure the exact size or brand of lift on this..

I've got a loud pop when turning right.. when in 2 or 4 wheel drive.. the pop doesnt occur when sitting still.. only when I roll forward or backward. I had my son take the pic of the suspension, since I'm at work today.. I couldn't find any up and down play in ball joints, or any play in the wheel bearing.. The wet spots are from when I was spraying oil on bushings to see if that was the problem.. The lower ball joint boot looks wrong..

Is it possible the CV axle is binding?

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance for looking.

Jim

A worn CV joint can make a "popping" sound when wheel is turned to sharper angle.
Also if vehicle has a LOT of lift, the CV joint could be put in a bind when wheel is turned tight enough.
2.5"-3" lift is about max based on most reports on LOST for a the Jeep CRD, not sure about gas models.

Thanks for the reply!

I'm not sure how much lift is on this. I dont have a stock one to compare it too.

I couldnt feel any play in the axle, and no tears in the boots.. I might have to replace it to see if that helps.. thanks for the input.

Good find, I am sure of what type of lift it is. It looks like an aluminum spacer between the spring isolator and the collar of the strut spring seat.

Does the popping occur while turning the steering wheel while rolling (this holds the vehicle speed constant and you vary steering) or start and stop rolling the vehicle at with the steering at the turning stop? (This hold the steering constant and varies vehicle speed)

This will help isolate if it is a steering or driveline making the noise.

The lower ball joint boot looks fine to me

I will try that tonight.. as a matter of fact I think it does only occur when I am either taking off or slowing down.. not a little pop either.. rather loud.. sounds like coming from front drivers side. I noticed it pulling into and out of an angled parking space.. but I'm not sure if I've ever made sharp turns at a steady low speed. I will try that.

Thanks for the reply.

That could be the rough country 3" lift.

It looks like those wheels and tires came off of a wrangler. It may have wheel spacers/adapters, since the kj lug patterns is different than the jk/jl. Just something to be aware of.
Congrats on the acquisition!

I'll have to check that about the spacers. Thanks for bringing that to my attention.

I went out in the hay field behind my house. Did some low speed turns, and some starts and stops while turning sharply, and I'll be damned I couldnt get it to make the noise at all.

The only thing I had done the night before , was jack it up and check the sway bar bushings.. (sprayed them with some penetrating oil and wiped them off looking for cracks).. I also was checking tie rods, wheel bearing, ball joint on the drivers side.. I dont see how any of that could have cured my pop/clunk noise. Could a sway bar make a noise like that?

Thanks for all the help guys.

Jim

Maybe check for evidence of contact between the upper control arm and spring. I knew a guy who installed a similar lift on a gasser and needed to get aftermarket JBA UCAs to eliminate the contact. I dont think that happens to everyone though, and it is hard to believe the hay field run wouldn't have induced the noise, if that was the issue.

Yeah the control arm wasnt contacting the spring.. good thought to check..

So new update.. I drove into a parking lot this morning.

Apparently it makes the noise when on dry pavement. (I'm in 2 wheel drive) when I am taking off while turning right, or when I am slowing down and turning right.

If I am just rolling and turn right it doesn"t make the noise.

Sound is loud clunk/pop coming from drivers side front.

I would pull the right front CV axle shaft out and inspect the CV joints.
Especially the outer CV joint. May just be a broken cage inside the joint or a worn out joint.

The right side half shaft also connects to an intermediate shaft which is known to occasionally seize up and cause a racket.

I meant to say also.. that it will only make the sound one time when taking off, or backing up.. until I stop and take off again with the wheel turned right.

I think JeepTorino hit the nail on the head!

Upper control arm bolts were at spec 80lbs

Lower control arm bolts were supposed to be 120 lbs.. front one was.. front-rear one was at like 60 lbs. Tightened it and went for a test drive.. no noise.

I will reply back in a couple days of driving to let you all know if it stays that way.

Thanks to all of you for the help! It was such a great welcome to the forums. Much appreciated.

Jim
