I purchased an '05 CRD a few months ago and finally got around to doing the front end work (original ball joints pretty much gone after 172k miles). The belly pan is sagging on the passenger side because it lacks support. Does it [belly pan] perform any important purpose except to hold a piece of sound insulation? It appears to be more of a trap for road debris and a cover to hide leaks.

The belly pan and skid plate are not the same thing. The belly pan is a plastic piece with sound insulation in it. It hides between the skid plate and the engine.

Inquiring minds want to know.

I would dare say that many crds are out there running without a belly pan. Just as you mentioned, mine was hiding a small coolant leak, and once discovered the pan was promptly thrown into the garbage. The only benefit I can think of would maybe be some sound insulation. I say trash it and never look back.

Kind of like that silly useless plastic engine cover on top of the engine; removed it and never looked back. That was several years ago. :ROTFL:
