Pulled up on the 4wd handle and there was no resistance/it did not shift into 4wd.
- Looked at the normal issue which is the bushing on the transfer case that's in good working order.
- Popped the cover off of the four wheel drive lever and the cable still appears to be attached and when I pull up on it cable moves back and forth (at least the part that is exposed.
- Underneath the vehicle when I pull on the cable sheath it does not move and still appears to be connected

I haven't taken the center console apart yet because it's my daily driver and wanted to order parts beforehand
Any ideas on what the issue might be? I'm thinking the cable might be broken inside the sheath? But not sure what I should expect to see if it is disconnected at the lever. Will I still see the cable moving when I pull the lever up and down if it is disconnected or do I need to remove the whole 4wd lever assembly to see the back side?

Does your vehicle have a "Command-Trac" or "Selec-Trac" transfer case? Different part numbers for the shifter cable assemblies and different prices.
Or
Look up part by VIN number. If you need help looking up the correct part number, let us know.

If the cable is still attached to the shift lever on the transfer case shifter inside the vehicle as you described, but it DOES NOT move the shift lever mechanism on the side of the transfer case, then the cable must be broke inside the shift cable housing. see picture

Selec Trac. Sounds like I need a new cable. Do I need just the cable or the cable and shifter assembly? I found a number of 52060462AG but don't know if that is for selec Trac or not so I am going to research it some more.

How hard is it to run the cable? Thank you for the help.

The part number you listed above is for a Wrangler, it will not fit or work for your Liberty Select-Trac.

Never had to install one, but it probably is not to bad of a job. Maybe some other lost member who has performed this service can advise you. :ALONE:

The correct part number for your vehicle is:
SHIFTER. Transfer Case. Selec-Trac Full Time 4WD System. Required: 001
This Fits Your 2005 Jeep Liberty LIMITED EDITION 2.8L Turbo 4 Cyl Diesel A/T 4X4
Part Number: 52129243AG

Is there any way to tell what position the transfer case is in? I'm in the process of replacing the cable now but the issue is is I don't remember if it was in full time or two wheel drive at the time when it broke. My sensor is also broken (changing that out too) so can't rely on the light.

The best way is to get underneath, move the selector all the way forward (2HI), then click it back to any other range you may need.

You might also want to take a look at the following (there are others, but these were the ones I could dig up quickly):

https://www.summitracing.com/parts/add-715545c
https://www.novak-adapt.com/catalog/shi ... /kit-sk2x/
https://www.boostwerksengineering.com/2 ... _p_27.html
https://www.azzysdesignworks.com/store/ ... inkage-kit

Unfortunately, nobody makes one that's claimed to be a direct fit for KJs, but it may be possible to use one for a different model. Having said that, the only one I have direct experience with is the Novak Adapters unit on a couple of XJs (including one of mine), but it was well worth installing.

Thanks. It appears all the way back is 2wd drive and then as it moves forward that's corresponds to each one of the modes (part time, full, etc).

Yep, that's correct. Sorry, should have mentioned that the ranges run in reverse at the transfer case from how they do at the lever - all the way back at the case is equivalent to all the way forward at the lever, and so on.

My 2005 Jeep Liberty Limited CRD 1J8GL58585W656334 has a broken (cut) :x Transfer Case Cable and I've purchased the correct Shifter assembly part #52129243AG
I would like specific instructions on how to replace the transfer case shifter cable assembly including how to remove the center console. Thanks in advance for the help.
