I have a 2006 Liberty Renegade. The shifter kinda broke about 4 years ago but I've been able to finagle it since without issues. I went to a junkyard the other day, saw the shifter I needed in a 2007 and pulled it. It's the same part number and all. But when I went to install it, I noticed the mounting notch for the shift interlock cable was different (was much narrower). Low and behold, my quick Google search revealed they used a different interlock cable in 2007 (just my luck
). So I'm presented with two choices. Should I just use my rotary tool and make that notch a little bigger for the 2002-2006 interlock cable to fit in? Or should I go back to the yard and pull that interlock cable from the 2007? And if I do, will that interlock cable fit in my Liberty?
The new (used) shifter works fine otherwise. I just have to be conscious that it is indeed in park and if the key gets stuck, I have to wiggle the cable to disengage it. But clearly not having a center console is not a good longterm solution
