Post subject:  Weird, Elusive Drivetrain Noise

I’m experiencing a weird noise that comes & goes…

Driving along around 40mph I suddenly felt a “pop” (or clang or bump? Hard to describe as it caught me off guard) and then a clicking or clacking with the wheel/drivetrain rotation. I was pulling a trailer at the time and my first thought was it was coming from the trailer (just a grill, nothing heavy). After recently experiencing a loose wheel and broken stud I’m also thinking “Dang, broke a stud again and the wheel is loose!” I pull over & everything looks and feels fine. But pulling forward I can hear that noise, I back up and start again and it disappears.

Confused, I take off again. Steering is fine, braking is fine, handling is fine – but something is not right somewhere. Then the same scenario starts again. Shifting into neutral has no affect, not associated with rpms. While I’m trying to listen, isolate and diagnose – it stops. I pull over at the next opportunity and check the wheel studs and all are properly torqued still. Nothing looks amiss. Driveshafts “feel” tight. Rear end oil looks clear and clean.

It does this twice more before I get home. It kinda reminds me of the old card clipped to bicycle spoke sound. It also seems like there is maybe a separate noise that “starts & stops” the sound, like something that is engaging & disengaging almost. There is no dash light indicating transfer case engagement or anything. It’s loud enough to cause concern, not just an annoyance or a Hmm what could that be, sound.

For the life of me I can’t figure out what could be the culprit. Anybody care to venture a guess or a direction to even investigate? It’s such an odd noise/occurrence I don’t even know what to search for on-line. Something in the tranny (oh I hope not…) even though shifting to neutral has no affect?

Jack/ block it up. Put the transfer case in neutral, crawl under and start firmly shaking everything. Wheel bearings, pinion bearings, U- Joints, input/ output shaft bearings etc.

Just a guess, transfer case chain worn out and popping occasionally.
Try driving it in Full Time 4x4 and see what noise it makes.

U-joints? Mine have never shown normal worn-out u-joint play but they were bone-dry destroyed-inside when I replaced them.

Not had any time to investigate further but thanks for the tips. Once I have a chance I’ll raise it up and start looking/shaking/checking and see what I can come up with.

I’ll report back. Could be a few weeks yet though...

Thanks,

Turns out the driver's side parking brake came apart and carnage ensued. Looks like the spring broke and let everything come loose.

Yeah, same thing happened to me, about 5 years ago. By the time I pulled the rear rotors, it was pretty ugly looking. Just glad you didn't need to use the emergency brakes for anything at the time.

Odd, wonder how common that is?
