My wife and I went up to Salida, Colorado yesterday, and decided on a whim to try Hayden Pass in her stock 2007 Liberty. Her only mods are the addition of Mopar official skid plates and one front tow hook.
There was nobody out, which was surprising, nice Saturday in June. Saw zero other people until about half-way up, where there was a guy and his SO off to the side jumping up and down and frantically waving their arms around. We stopped. They had somehow managed to get high centered on a tree stump and were scared to death that they were going to be spending the night in the woods. The front diff was just sitting there up in the sky on a stump maybe a foot and a half high. I have no idea how they did it. It's a good thing they were stuck, though, because if they had kept going another ten feet, they would have been over the edge.
So we got out our jack (hint: do not drive your car around without a jack) and put some rocks under the front tires, then hooked up my old tow strap from about 1985 and pulled them off. It was hilarious.
Guy was really embarrassed. "How come your old Liberty can get me unstuck when I have an unstuckable Rubicon???"
We continued on after the big rescue. The west side of the pass coming down is very rough and churned up by the big trucks. We made lots of contact but afterwards I looked and the only thing that hit rock was the skid plates and those low suspension mount points in the back.
The Liberty rules!!!
