Post subject:  brake rotors

I need to replace my rotors. I'm getting a bad vibration after new brakes. My question is What size is the big nut to get the rotor off? And do I need a SUPER SIZE impact to get it off? I searched this topic but we all know the search on this site isn't the best. I can never find what I'm looking for.

You do not need to take the axlenut off(the big center one),just jack the front end up,pull the wheel/tire off, remove the caliper(2-12mm bolts)and brake pads, remove caliper mount(I believe 22mm bolts),and then the rotor will pull right off.To install just reverse order, caliper mount bolts(the big ones)are torqued to 100 ft/lbs and the small ones are torqued to 132 in/lbs.

You might try changing the rotors to PowerSlot and Hawk pads ( LTS LIght Truck & SUV Pads ). I think you can find them at www.tirerack.com

Just out of curiosity, when you replaced your pads did you have the rotors machined? I would try that before getting new rotors (cheaper anyway).

When I bought the kj about 3 weeks ago used, The dealer replaced the pads only. The rotors look a little worn. New ones are only $22 so I went ahead and bought new ones. Thanks for the help. The damdest thing I also had to replace the radiator because of a small hole in the plastic part. It was leaking fast enough for the engine to get hot. Took me two hours to do that by myself. $250 for a new radiator.

Something to try nextime.........Before you replace the rotors do 3 or 4 hard stops from 60mph+
drive for 5 or 10 minutes in between hard stops to cool rotors. This may get rid of rotor thickness variations , some people refer to RTV as "warped rotors" which can actually be caused by patches of brake material built up on rotors

The pinhole leak in the plastic portion of the radiator on the driver's side is pretty common. I had to replace mine too.
