Tires on stock Liberty

Hey everyone, new Liberty on the block.

How large of a tire can be put on a stock Liberty (without doing any modifications). I've got a Columbia edition, which has the same wheels & tires as the Renegade (235/75/16's I think).

I think 245s might be the hifghest you can go on stock suspension, but you will have to trim a little bit of your wheel well 9pinch weld cover and maybe some in front too)

I run 255s with some rubbing and have a Rocky Road Outfitters 2.5" lift

So basically I can't go any bigger than stock, without at least some minor modifications to avoid rubbing.

Yeah, you can get about another 1/2 inch or so in diameter and 10mm width or so, but more than that requires a lift.

There are many threads about this already...and as a new Liberty owner, at least two of them are mine lol

you can run 245/70R16's with no rubbing at all. here is a link to some pics of my tires that size on a stock libby:

I have some BF Goodrich All-Terrains at a 225/75 R16 size, and ran them on my stock liberty before I lifted it (They are still on my lifted liberty) They worked very well, and they're a fantastic off road tire. Are you sure you don't have 235/70's? They are actually shorter (but slightly wider) than the 225/75

A 245/70/16/ will work no problem. also, a 225/75/16 is the same height as a 245/70/16, but an inch narrower. Both of these tires will fit a stock KJ.

just wasn't sure if they only applied to the 16'x7.0".

I'm running 245/65R17 Firestone Destination AT's on the 2005 17"X17.5" Limited rims. The combo fits really well. I highly recommend it.

That would work great, except the Origonal poster has 16 inch wheels, not 17...

Backspace is the only way to eliminate this

You folks gotta look at the tread width and not the section width when you talk about how much wider the tire is. Don't forget section width (balloon)goes up and down depending on wheel width too. Section width is useless except for giving unneeded rubbing issues.

You can see the 225/75 is probably the stiffest tire.

a 245/70 has a 7.5" tread and 9.8" section on a 7.0" wheel

a 235/70 is 7.2" tread, 9.5" section

a 225/75 is 7" tread 8.8" section

a 255/70 is 7.8" tread, 10.2 section

So the footprint ain't much of a diff

No, they are saying that it DOESN'T rub. A lot of people are running this size and very few have had to trim anything to prevent rubbing. These are the people who own those size tires reporting no rub, so I would tend to believe them first. If you want a stone cold guarantee of no rubbing, sure you will probably have to go with a stock size, and who knows, maybe a stock size will even rub under the right circumstances.

It doesn't matter which measurement you use, the width of the tire is still relative to that given width. What the actual tread width or section width of the tire is is not important - what is important is "does it fit", to which the answer is "yes". No matter which width you look at a 225 will be narrower than a 235, and a 235 will be narrower than a 245. Sure you can change the rim width and have some effect, you can also change the air pressure, among a billion other things.

Nobody is really going to sit down and measure out all the possibilities when they can just take the word of the dozens of people who have used trial and error and determined that the 245/70R16 tire fits a stock liberty. If you're paranoid about it, get one of the stock sizes, the 225/75R16 or the 235/70R16. The 245/70 size is basically the combination of a tire a little bit wider than the 235 and a little bit taller than the 225/75.

I have been running 245/70/16's for a few months now I have never noticed rubbing. Just recently when I was installing my ARB I noticed some black marks on my fender wells in the front. No noticeable tread loss so I'd say that its not to big for stock.

Well I think that the consensus is in. In Texas it is warmer than up in Canada. Their tires and drivers are full of more hot air that makes the tires expand more and the wheel wells seam smaller.

In Canada we have a cleaner colder denser air that allows us to run 245/70-r16 tires on a stock libby without any rubbing.

If you want to inspect my libby and look at 245/70 r16 Bridgestone Dueller A/T's that I just took off after 80k km's give me a PM and we can meet for a coffee. If you want to take a drive down to Texas and look at the only 2 wd Libby that I have ever heard of :shock:

I'm sure that the1Jfrog will accommodate you.

I'll take the best tread width (foot print) without the section overinflation, thanks. Usable tire -vs- fluff.
