| Post subject: | Rock Lizard Rear Bumper Update |
OK, these threads keep getting huge. So, I am getting the final pre-production prototype of the rear bumper either tomorrow or early next week. I will get that thing put together ASAP along with the carriers for final production model pictures. Once I get it together and make sure there are no more changes, then I will put them into production. My manufacturer said they are finally catching up on things, so my production order may be done closer to the beginning of August instead of middle or late August like I have mentioned to my pre-order customers, but please don't get your hopes up just in case. Anyways, the main thing I wanted to mention here is when this all started, I said I would give a 6 week deadline warning for preorders. Well, here is it, August 1st is the last day for the pre-order pricing. Also, with all the orders I have been getting, delivery will happen in order of who placed their orders first. I only have so many bumpers being put through this first batch, then the next batch will follow about 4-6 weeks behind that. Don't forget about the giveaway contest that is still going on. |

You can win a lot more than just the rear bumper. http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/vie ... php?t=5466 |

Marty: Do you have a pic of the carrier yet? And what's the preorder price of the carrier? |

I don't have any pictures of the carrier yet, but the prices are listed on my website under the rear bumper prices. Wally has one of the first prototypes and recently put on the tire carrier I made for that prototype, but the hinge and latch are going to be completely different that what he got. The hinge assembly was going to be a 3/4" through bolt that clamped the top plate under the taillight down on the hinge to the bumper. That wasn't working out as good as I planned, so I went back to the tried and trusty 1000lb trailor spindle and bearing hinge, so with the short arm design and this bearing/spindle hinge, you can put a 37" tire on there easily. I am planning on making the mounting plate of the carrier adjustable in depth on all the carriers so it will fit all tire sizes, wheel size, and backspacing. Here are some pictures of the latch setup. The latch on the left was the original plan, but just had a little too much play between the latch and the striker, and I would have to figure out a handle for the thing. The latch to the right is what I am going to use now, and the handle works with the latch perfectly, and the handle folds down flat when not in use. The new beefy latch has a much bigger striker, and there is virtually no play at all between the striker and the latch.

Thanks for the heads up!! I maybe able to squuek in a pre-production order! I see the bumper's pics being trail tested, but not any of the the thing being used as a jack point. The whole reason I'm looking for front and rear bumpers is I want to be able to put a hi-lift under both ends! I assume you've tested that from various points and it will hold?? This thing aint just for looks is it? |

You'll be giving us a 6-week heads-up for the front bumpers, too, right? I really want to get in on that one. |

OK, so I have finally received the final production model prototype, and have tacked most of it together, and it is going together great. I plan to finish it up and the tire carrier hopefully by next weekend. Then I will put my production order in. Things are running a little behind for those guys that already preordered, and I do apologize for that. I hoped to have the order in by now, but don't want to do it until I get this last prototype finished an make sure there aren't any last minute booboo's. I am real happy with the responses and preorders I have received so far. Definately makes it worth all the work. Looks like from all the preorders I have received, I only have about 4 more bumpers available on this first production batch, and coincidentally, about four more weeks left on the preorder pricing. I'm only making up so many on this first batch to make sure I don't kill myself trying to get them all built and not take too long doing so. |

Marty: any chance we'll get a pic of the tire carrier in action and mounted since no one's seen it yet? I'd probably preorder it but not if I have seen what I've ordered. Hoping that rear bumper gets to me beofre the summer is over. Thanks, man! mt |

I'm going to keep the tire carrier preorder price going for awhile after the bumper comes out, just because it hasn't been seen yet, so no stress on getting in on that price. I have everything here to finish this last bumper and the tire carrier, just need to get my guinea pig over here to finish putting it all together. |

Hey Rock Lizard how much will the production rear bumber weigh? With tire carrier?I would like a steel rear bumber to but need to keep the weight down,at least in a couple of weeks I should be able to "see" what it looks like personnally on a kj(and if I get one save on shipping to!).My biggest factor in buying something like that is to see how it looks on the vehicle before buying and pics just don't do it for me(I like to touch it and look at it from every angle). |

The bumper itself weighs 100lbs. The carrier, I will have a better idea in the next week or two, but probably around 40lbs. If you can check it out personally, then by all means. And saving on shipping is always a good thing. |

Did you happen to weigh all the stuff that gets taken off? I am wondering what the net weight gain will be. I imagine if one was to lose their factory hitch it may not be all that much. |

When we removed Ted's rear bumper and factory hitch, they weighed about 50lbs together. |

FWIW, The Front bumper and front hidden hitch off my 03 KJ weighed right around 40 lbs. (I know this is rear bumper discussion but just for info) |

Yeah but Ted's bumper had been chipped away so he probably lost about, oh, say, 150 lbs from all his off-roading.... Just kidding.......or am I? |

I am in! It will take a hi-lift, right? I like the photos and see the shackles for the straps, but wondering how it holds to jacking from it? You must have tried! |
