Walnut Canyon Trail, also known as Battleaxe Trail
Difficulty rating- Moderate (5 of 10, Depending on the damage done from our recent rains, 4x4 required)
Scenic rating- High (9 of 10)
Estimated driving time- 6 hours
Meeting Date and Time- Sunday 9/17/06 7:30 AM (Leaving at 8:30 AM)
Meeting location- Los Hermanos Restaurant on US Highway 60 between milepost 226 and 227 in Superior, AZ. Address is- 835 W US Highway 60, Superior, AZ

We will gather at the restaurant for breakfast before leaving for the trailhead at 8:30 AM. The trailhead is the intersection of Highway 177 and Battleax road. Battleax road is between milepost 161 and 162 on Highway 177.

From the Trails.com website:
A photographer’s dream. Beautiful Sonoran Desert with towering red buttes on all sides of the trail. A fun drive offering real adventure. Hike into the nearby White Canyon Wilderness area north of the trail. Winding, rutted road with moderate climbs and descents. Narrow in a few places. Our group drove the trail following a period of torrential rains. Several places were badly washed out, which required some rock-stacking for several stock vehicles in our group. While the road is well defined most of the way, one section crosses a low sandy area along the Gila River. Rains had washed away previous tire tracks making route-finding difficult. Skid plates and high ground clearance recommended for stock vehicles.

This trip will be a preview of the Sun Run II area. This trail is an alternate route to the Coke Ovens which is a major area destination.

Ah, Los Hermanos is a great restaurant. Probably gonna need a 'rest' stop along the way though.

I might fly in and visit my folks in Payson and tag along in someone's right seat.

Can't seem to find a cheap flight yet.

OK, I've been looking forward to this one. Now I just need to make sure I get to bed early enough after getting off work at 11pm that saturday :P I should have an open seat if anyone needs to ride along...

Vern,

It looks unlikely that I'll be able to attend - I think my radiator is shot. We'll see later today. Doh!

Travis:
Keep us posted on the condition of Martinez canyon. We may want it as a contingency hard core trail for the ambitious sun run folks.

CRUD! I had a premonition about my LBJs last night so I took the floor jack with me this morning and after filling up I checked them - the right side had about 3mm of play and the left was not quite as loose, so I will be calling a dealer tomorrow to get an appointment to get them done.

Needless to say, I am not going to Walnut Canyon today...

Beautiful trail!
Where was everybody? You missed it.
Not a difficult trail but very scenic and a very fine day was had by all. This trail can be done by stock vehicles but expect significant AZ pinstriping. Here's some pix:

Love to see a Liberty leading a lineup of rubicon's.
There wasn't too much stuff to show off on, but the run and the day were beautiful.
