Post subject:  State land permit update

The State Land Department is refusing to issue the state land permits to the AZ State Association of 4WD Clubs (ASA4WDC) as they have traditionally done without an impossible amount of information. Therefore the ASA4WDC has been unable to issue the permits to the member clubs. The ASA4WDC is continuing to work this issue and has appealed to the State Land Commissioner. Here is an update I received recently:

"... Traditionally, the ASA has paid for and furnished the AZ State Land Permits. Unfortunately, this year we are running to some hassles from the State Land Department. They want us (each club) to give them a complete list of all trips for the YEAR, number of vehicles on each run, number of occupants for each vehicle, the approximate time spent on the run and the FIRM dates of all runs by each club. ... We (ASA) believe this to be unreasonable and are appealing this to the Commissioner for State Lands. I don't know just how far we will get, but we are trying to address this issue in the best interest of the clubs.

I hope the above answers your questions,
Regards,
Don Hicks
ASA Membership"

I will keep you all posted on the details as I know them.

Sounds a lot like the stuff we were hearing in the Gila planning meeting from Game and Fish along with some others, as if the typical run is planned three months or more in advance. A lot of the runs I've been on are planned more like three to five DAYS in advance. The only things I can tell you for sure that I'll be doing three months from now is working and sleeping - everything else is as it comes :D

Thanks for keeping us updated on this Vern. Guess it's a good thing I have my own State Trust permit.

I would guess what they really want is usage statistics so they can quantify their risk/liability/costs to have the land open to us 4x4 folks. But sounds like they mis-verbalized it in the form of somthing impossible to achive. If they could track usage statistics it would be very beneficial to them. perhaps giving them this information after the fact (end of the year). I think that would be a fair compromise.

Or if you have time you can take the form down to the State Land office at 1616 W Adams St in Phoenix. Thats just east of 17th Ave on the north side of Washington/Adams (they merge right at the office). Here's a link to a google map of the area. Looks like the best place to park is at Wesley Bolin park and walk north to the SLD office.

Since a number of the runs we do require access to State Land at some point it's always best to have one of these in your vehicle, plus it helps support the State Lands that we use.
