I'm looking at Varney's AZ ghost towns book, and Copper Creek looks interesting. I understand that there have been issues with trash lately, was it closed down? Is it a difficult run?

Thanks y'all,
Russ

...to clarify, I'm not talking about Rug Road or even the section past the town of Copper Creek up toward Klondyke - just Copper Creek Road from Mammoth to Copper Creek.

Some info I'm seeing on the net is that you can go to Copper Creek but the road/trail to Sibley Mansion is closed. When were you planning on doing this? Maybe the weekend of the 21st/22nd since Dan's got his Gap trip going the 14th. Depending on the date and, of course, work I could see doing this one. If nothing else it would make for some nice pictures.

A little off-topic:

Jim Varney was my English teacher in high school (Rincon). Great guy - nearly every ghost town he writes about he reached on his touring bike (pre-mountain bike days).

I'm thinking pictures as well, but I wouldn't start making any plans just yet - Sibley Mansion is a little over a mile from the "parking lot", so it's going to be a sweaty hike (likely in monsoon season) to get there. Ditto for BlueBird Mine, or the overlook to the south. We're probably looking at a couple hours worth of hiking and picture-taking.

Also, looking at ExpeditionsWest's GPS track of the run, they make an average of about 7mph up to the "parking lot" and then drop to 0.5 mph average from there to Sibley Mansion, so my guess is that's the difficult section. The drive in is probably pretty easy.

So I think we're looking at more of a park and hike than a 4WD outing.

We are up for it, but just wanted to do full disclosure.

Ah, I think there is a minor disconnect here - I wasn't planning on going to Sibley Mansion at all :P I was thinking more about pictures around Copper Creek itself. If the road/trail/whatever to the mansion is blocked/gated, I think it best to stay away from there. As for timing this could definitely be a late summer or early fall run, no problems there.

Gotcha - I didn't know if it was closed closed or just closed to traffic. Yeah, I think this is one we can leave on the list for after the summer.

This is a trail I have wanted to do for some time but it was my understanding that the private land owner had everything locked up due to vandalism. Count me in for a visit to this area in the fall. I don't mind hiking and wheeling.
