And another September run! This one out in the Chiricahuas, Pinery Canyon Road (which is easy) and its side trails of varying difficulty. September 15, Pinery Canyon Road and 181, right in front of the National Monument, time TBD but probably 9:00am. Anybody? |

Excellent. The National Monument has a nice campground, I can't imagine that it would fill up even on a Friday night in mid-September. Route is subject to whim, but will almost certainly include at least portions of Hands Pass ("North Fork" and Hilltop Road on my Garmin map) and Barfoot Park (not on my map, but off of NF-42d) which are from the Massey & Wilson book, trails South #21 and #23 respectively. I figure we can meet at 9:00am at Pinery Canyon Road and 181, and be on the road at 9:30. Depending on how far people are coming that morning, hit the road time my be closer to 10:00. [EDIT] Let's make that 8:30, on the road by 9:00. Russ |

Chiricahuas are great. I'll put in for the days this weekend. Been up there a few times over the years. Should be really pretty after monsoons are over. Vern, Hand's Pass is the road you, DH and I did when we camped up there with Britts. |

Yeah we did hands pass through white tail canyon. We camped and came in off the Paradise road. |

Hands Pass is quite a challenge, tippy in spots, and sometimes tippy *and* slidey. The Barfoot Park trail really does end in a really severe washout. All in all, a good time, with only one valve stem destroyed and lots of Arizona pinstriping. Russ.....thanks for posting up the pics!!! looks like some great exploring, I wish we could have made it !! Is the elevation, high?.......does that area get snow in the winter? |

Elevation ranged from a little less than 5,000 ft to over 8,000 ft at the top of the pass in the middle of Pinery Canyon Road. The high altitude piney woods were nice and cool on Saturday, like 70 degrees around noon. One map I saw (can't remember which, or find it now) shows that Pinery Canyon Road closes in winter, so yeah, I'm guessing plenty of snow. It was a lot of fun. We never even got to Pine Canyon Road (from 181 to Pinery Canyon Road) which is supposed to be (relatively) easy but more photogenic, so we are going to have to go back sooner or later. |

Russ, great meeting you and everybody else. We had a great time wheeling and hanging out with you all. Yeah most of those roads can be closed during the winter. Usually a few inches of snow on them, but with as narrow as they are, the FS closes them down. This last year I think it was up to a foot of snow. I wanted to head up that way and play in it but never got the chance. |
