| Post subject: | Hole-in-the-Rock Trail.... |
Has anyone here done or know anything about the Hole-in-the-Rock Trail which starts just east of Escalante, UT? Massey and Wilson's Utah book SW #22, rates it on a scale of 1-10, a 1 and only a 4 for the last 5.3 miles. I've done some research online and everything I read rates it as pretty tough trail which contradicts Massey and Wilson. I'd appriciate any information and opinions from anyone that has run it. Yes, is that a problem? I normally don't read the Utah forum and I didn't think the folks there read this forum, so to increase the exposure to my question, I posted in both forums. By your response, I take it you have no knowledge or have anything to say about the trail in question and are only interested if I cross posted??? |

yeah the link Corwynn posted is the best write up I've seen in years. Always enjoy reading it and cursing the jeep for blowing out the upper a arms a few weeks before I too was supposed to go on this trip. I'm sure Roachman or AZScout will chime in with more info, they both went on the trip too. Looks like fun. I know some of us have been wanting to go for quite a while now. |

Weren't Dan and Dave the two black KJs? I know Dan's is the one far right, Renegade with the metal insert on the front bumper. Don't know for sure what color Dave's was at the time but I thought it was black as well? EDIT: never mind, found another picture with a rear shot of the other black KJ with an AZ plate. Hi Dave!

There has been talk of doing this trail as an alternative to Moab in future years. Maybe it's time to dust off that plan. |

The book you are reading is for the easy side of HITR (hole in the Rock and takes you to the top of the "hole" however the best HITR trail is on the other side of the lake and starts near Halls Crossing UT (this is a place were you can catch a ferry accross the lake.) the writeup that corwin posted is the best details of wht the trail looks like. Very challanging and keeps you on you toes the whole time but is a blast. |

I have done both sides of the "Hole in the Rock" trail.. the one you are asking about is the easy side.. It takes you to the top of the Hole, where you can climb down to the waters edge.. (it is a bi*ch to climb back up though.) It has some beautiful scenery, a couple of difficult places to wheel, and a lot of history to it.. If you are interested in reading about it, get the "Hole-in-the-Rock" book by David E. Miller on Amazon.. I did this section in August '01 when my Liberty was still STOCK.. The OTHER side of the Lake Powell is where the difficult part is.. It is where the writeup is talking about... viewtopic.php?t=1298 You need to have a lift kit , tires , rails, and skids to do this side.. (back when the Mormons built this road, Lake Powell was not there, so it is all one trail, but now with two distinct sections) Either side you choose to go on will not dissapoint.. I've done it. First time without a lift in 2006 made it about half way then road with my buddy in his lifted and locked wrangler. Second time in 2008, with 2.5 lift and air lockers had no problems. Great trail, definitely some areas that require care and good spotting. Some pics from the trip on my build page. |
