For those unable to make it: you missed a laid back beautiful day. In terms of challenges I'd rate this run about a one but in terms of an enjoyable relaxing afternoon it rates right up there with the best of 'em. There was one little side trip I took that required a couple of attempts (still getting used to the 5-speed offroad and I should've shifted into lo) but the rest of the day was a lazy gentle ride through an extremely beautiful wash and box canyon. It was great meeting all the folks I'd not met before and if anyone needs a top rank chuck wagon chef I think we've found one. We did have one minor casualty in Kevin's drivetrain making noises but a few folks took turns crawling under the red Sport and Kevin was able to get back onto the pavement. (hope that turns out to be something easily fixed Kevin and hope you made it home alright) We all had fun taking turns barreling through the water and pics are coming. If anyone has any action shots of the black beast please pm me and I'll send you my email addy. Thanks for the great day everyone and look forward to seeing everyone out on the trail again!! |

Yep, made it home OK, many thanks to AJ and Beth for giving up the rest of their day and following me home to make sure I got here safe. I haven't had the courage to crawl underneath yet but I *think* it might be a u-joint on the front propeller shaft. I was doing some reading in the FSM and it seems that may be the most likely cause. I'll crawl under tomorrow and pull it out, get some pics and post for advice. Despite all that it was a blast, and I'd love to go up there maybe in a couple of weeks when the trees have got some more color on them. The water felt great on my feet and the food was delicious. Can't wait to do it again! |

OK, so I'm an idiot - the front propeller shaft doesn't have u-joints, just the rear one (what most would refer to as the main driveshaft). Took a quick look underneath but still can't see anything. Probably need to take it to a nearby dirt lot and try 4WD just to see if I can recreate what was happening, but I have other things to do today so that'll wait. With my luck it'll be something internal to the t-case and I'll need to get it serviced ![]() |

What type of noise was it (grind, or pop?) and did you lose 4wheel in the front? |

It was a squealing, grating sound that only occurred as the vehicle was moving, even did it when I was in 2WD. Further down the trail it started bucking and shaking, then it stopped doing anything. Wound up driving it home and finally got up the courage to look underneath this morning. Found that the rubber seal on the rear companion flange of the propeller shaft was torn and letting anything and everything in: ![]() Time to post in the 'parts wanted' section to see if anyone has a front propeller shaft available... |
