Beth and I are up to it!!!

I'd suggest Montana Mountain, Wells #48. Some of us did it this past summer. It's rated "Moderate" but very do able in a stock KJ.

There's a good spot at the top where we could stop for a couple of hours and grill some hotdogs and just hang out and/or maybe Chinese for dinner in Gold Canyon after the run???

The "Rock Garden" is the worst part of the trail....
There are some optional side trails that are fun that we didn't try last summer.

El Camino De Diablo...? (of course gonna take a bit of prep and planning)

It's between Florence Junction and Superior, on the north side of US 60.

You could camp at the top of Montana Mountain where I suggested we grill some hot dogs, but that's roughly 15 miles off the main road. I've seen people camping in other spots closer to the highway. If you want to do a quick "scouting" trip before the run, Beth and I could take you up there....

This sounds great to me! would you guys be willing to lead the actual run?

Unless others are going to camp, (on the trail) let me suggest that you camp the beginning or end of the trail, or someplace close by. That way you will have other vehicles with thru the whole trail.

...maybe yall can come to my neck of the woods before summer kicks in towards teh end of April. I'll start some scouting and see what decent BLM land is available along with other trails....

Okay... so are we doing this Saturday, Feb 2??? If you're interested, let me know so I can set up a meeting place and time.

A TRAIL RIDE FOR THOES WHO DON'T CARE ABOUT THE SUPER BOWL for thoes of us who don't really care about the big game, and would rather stay at home like a hermit all weekend to avoid the additional traffic, people, congestion and inflated prices this city will experience that weekend, I suggest a getaway to the open spaces of the outdoors, far away from the hustle and bustle nightmare that this city will be that weekend. infact, i think its a perfect weekend to get out in to the wilderness in our jeeps for some 4x4 FUN!! who's with me...? location and trail suggestions anyone? Since we just got bit by the Jeep bug, we aren't the right people to lead an adventure, just yet. Anyone have a good idea for a stock vehicle weekend run for FEB 1-3 ? I really enjoyed the Sedona area and it's close by and Dead Horse Ranch is a nice campground, Im sure there are lots of places and trail levels to explore up there...

Uh Oh Somebody has been infected big time. Good to see. It seems that you've already started working on the cure...More wheeling. LOL. Sorry dong think I'll be able to make it up there next weekend though. I'm sure you'll get plenty of takers though. Have a great time. Mike

That could be good, or there are plenty of trails on the east side of the valley (far, far away from the morass that Cardinals Stadium will be that weekend). Montana Mountain, Box Canyon, etc are doable stock. I'm just throwing out suggestions but can't say for sure that I'll be there. If you go to Sedona again there's always the Cinders OHV park just north of Flagstaff for a nice day trip.

I can stand on the roof of my house and see the glow of the parking lot/nite spotliting of University of Phoenix Stadium. I am that close. And I have nothing to do with the superbowl! So here I am trying to wipe off the Az pinstripping from FITS III and here is another possible camping, wheeling run. Umm I think I got the bug too! Tentatively pencil me in also!! PS: To Rkeegstra, Again! Thank You so very much for the use of your second FRS Radio during FITS III. You and all of the wonderfull LOST people I met there along with the Wheeling bug made me a believer! Roland

Yeah definitely needs some planning, but if not this spring it might make a good run in the fall.

We have never been up there and will not have a chance to pre-run it unfortunatly. I assume we are talking about just picking a spot along the trail and camping (no campgrounds up there) that means we need to take everything we need (firewood, food, supplies, etc) and there will be no bath/shower facilities? Thats cool with us, we like roughing it.

I dont think we are going to camp after all, and It looks like for saturday We may not be able to go due to a schedule issue and how far away from us the proposed location is. before we decide on the Montana Mountain location i thought i would suggest this possibility: http://www.go-arizona.com/backway-to-crown-king/ The Backway to Crown King trail is quite challenging, but rewarding with the history that can be seen along the way. It is recommended to take a vehicle with adequate ground clearance and capable of decent articulation. Most stock jeeps and 4x4 trucks can make the trip. Though it is advisable to bring a tow strap. This is a popular weekend trip so if keep a watchful eye for others on the trail. The Basics Surface: Rocky, exposure. Difficulty: Difficult/Intermediate Directions From Phoenix go north on I-17, then get on westbound 74. Take that all the way to Castle Hot Springs road. I have never been up this trail before, has anyone else? its basicly right behind lake pleasant, but the inforamtion does not say how long of a trial, although is says "weekend trip". A glance at the map and looking at the distance from the entry point to Crown King is about 30 miles (assuming i have guessed the trail route correctly). That translates to about a 4-5 hour trip ONE WAY depending on trail difficulty. We either have to backtrack to get out, OR, go another 17 miles to the nearest pavement of Crown King rd. which is off the "bumble bee" exit off the I-17 just north of Black Canyon City. According to the ToPo map this is mostly moutainous area.

Just a note... this is an all day trail. The Wells Arizona book shows several trails between Yuma and Quartzsite. We've done #58 and #60 off I-10, north of Yuma.

I would like to go on a run as long as my stock kk can handle it and I dont have to work. Montana mountain sounds cool. I wouldnt mine camping as long as there is some place to park a motor home.
