Post subject:  Monthly tech/How to hands on get together

I would like to get more activities going for AZ. We have some great trail runs, but not everyone is up for running offroad trails in the summer. In particular, I would like some activities to bring in newbies or people who have not been around for awhile. Would anyone be up for monthly tech get togethers? The idea is we would meet for a few hours and discuss a repair or maintenance procedure while possibly performing it on some kj's. I am not thinking all day projects-- but a half day or less. Some of these could even be weeknights with trip out to eat afterwards.

We would need:

--competent volunteers to present each subject.
--test vehicles
--place to do vehicle work and needed tools
--food and drink for after we are done, while we are in progress.
--vehicles with parts ready to go on or get tinkered with

Some subject ideas:

--lift and a-arms.
--lower ball joints
--replacing steering rod ends and steering rod, changing power steering fluid.
--fluid flush (oil, diffs, transfer case), plugs
--electronic fan disassembly and cleaning, extended breathers.
--changing serpentine belt.
--brake system (pads, rotors, lines, master cylinder)
--tow hooks, skids, rock rails

maybe an extra CRD session:

MAP clean, SEGR install, Provent EHM mod, etc...

So good idea, bad idea? What times would be best. Keep in mind we don't want to interfere with runs, or take up too many weekends. I envision a rotating schedule, so that everyone can come out to a few of these get togethers.

Hey Pablo, I think this is a great idea, especially with the hotter months coming up, we could do this once a month instead of attempting to do runs in the middle of the summer. Maybe even some fabrications of side bars, racks, etc.

This could be a lot of fun. Sign me up!

I'm in for weekends. It would be difficult for me to make it to Phoenix for weeknights

This a great idea! I'm interested, but my automotive skills don't actually come close to being actual skills...

Pablo, great idea for a little fun get together. Don't know how many times i'd be able to make em. For you "northern" folks though it'd be a great chance for jeep bonding.

I have a pretty well equipped garage and do a lot of mechanic work if we need a place ou in East Mesa.

Awesome. See no reason why we can't eventually get one in Tuscon area going too. So what do we want to go over first?

Hint: Does anyone have any repairs to do or anything waiting to go on?

Well, since you asked I need to get my tank skid on, and I figured since I'm under there I'd go ahead and do the fluid in the rear diff. I'm just waiting for everything to heal from my surgery before I get going on this. There's a couple of other items I want to take care of but they're not as high on the priority list.

I need to change my diffs too, so how about on a weekend in the middle of May, early morning? What day works best?

Keep in mind that so far we have:

May 17th run up north

May 11th is mothers day.

May May 28th - June 1st (Beth and AJ and others are hitting Canyon De Chelly)

So the 19/20th or the 26/27th are good canidates.

Honestly I'd be willing to make a run over there for certain things... particularly if you guys start playing with more on th fabrication side... (anyone have a well-ventilated garage I can mold carbon fiber in? )

if you need a demo for the lift i offer mine up. it needs to come off, be modified slightly, and put back on. and i am always willing to donate use of my garage for this sort of thing

So are we going to do it during the weekend? I am only available on May 17th...saturday...but I dont have much going on in June...maybe this would give us more time to prepare? One of the things I need to do to my KJ is change a wheel stud. As for fabrication, I was thinking of doing my own boulder bars but I need to measure ones from somebody else...

Well there is a run the 17th so that is out.

How about:

Fluids and install gas tank skid overview. We can do that on the 19/20 or the 26/27. So far all of the garages offered are in Mesa. If everyone is okay with that we can just plan on doing it in one of the offered locations.

I will PM Coryyn and see when he is up to one of these dates. If so, we will do diff fluids and gas tank skids. Otherwise, we can do a lift howto.

Well Corwyyn pmed me back and said he is all booked up for this month and does not think he will be able to make it. So that leaves me leaning toward the lift review. I will PM MP40 and make sure he is good to go. (I would volunteer the CRD, but I have the 2.5 inch lift on the CRD and I am not unbolting the lower control arm and fighting the clevis for nothing.)

I am interested. Cant offer location or tools but I have some CRD mods experience.
I was thinking of the A Arm job, but the new gen 5s seem to be problematic for 2.5 in lifts?

Since you and Pablo already have this done, how about an in-tank lift pump seminar for those of us with CRD's? I volunteer my rig as the guinne pig. Of course we'll have to schedule around my fuel tank being near empty! :D

I would be VEEEERY interested if you guys would be willing to help me out with a lift pump install. Let me know if you guys put something together.

We can use my garage to do the lift pump. I dont how to do it but it cant be much harder than changing the oil filter on my 08 kk. :) I usually do all maintenance myself but I think the lube shop will be doing oil changes on that thing. Sundays are probably best for me.

I would love to help you guys with the lift pump, but I did not put it on. The shop did. That was cheating, but that is how it goes. We could reverse engineer it?

I was hoping to keep this inclusive of everyone however. Most gasser drivers are not going to have to mess with their fuel pump that often. So that would mean we need to cover two topics at once. Not a problem with me.

So we need a volunteer with some experience doing the CRD lift pump and we can also do a review of the lift install.

So this brings me back to herding the cats, which date is the best date?

24th or 25th?
