WE HAVE BEEN FORCED TO CANCEL THIS RUN DUE TO THE RAINFALL WATER LEVEL IN TONTO CREEK MAKING THE CREEK UNCROSSABLE AT THIS TIME, WE ARE GOING TO DO THE SUNFLOWER MINE RUN INSTEAD.

8/30/08
Saturday morning leave at 8:00am SHARP from the gas station/general store in Punkin Center, AZ (take the Beeline Hwy (87) north, turn right at the rest stop onto AZ-188 and go appx 10 miles to Punkin Center) and take the trail from Punkin Center to Young, AZ (from the reports a 2.5-3.0 trail, about the same as the harder sections of the BW to CK, should be lifted with decent tires, tow hooks and a strap) this is a 2 day trail ride possibly around 75 miles in total. We will camp somewhere along the "Punkin Center to Young" trail Saturday night and Sunday end up in Young, AZ

For the return trip ???... we'll see what time we arrive in Young and figure out the best way back, maby do the trail in reverse!?! Monday is a holiday for most. This is more of a Family Overland Adventure so take everything you need for wheelin', campin', target shootin' and drinkin' along for the ride! kids and pets welcome! once on the trail there will be no re-supply untill we reach Young, AZ so make sure you have what you need when we leave Punkin Center AND make sure you hit the trail with a FULL TANK OF GAS.

Just got back from a 3 day trip to Young yesterday  I would love to do this one but I have a race in Jerome over the weekend, have fun though! It rained on us 2 out of the three days there, it was amazing (as usual).

There is no diesel in Young for those CRD folks, keep that in mind. This area was a blast when we had our weekend in May:

CMax26az... you have me curious. What trail are you talking about that runs 75 miles from Punkin Center to Young? I know of two that I've done in a stock height KJ, one of which took me 4 hours to do a 7 mile section because it was so rocky and I still had street tires and no skids at the time.

Here are the two trails I'm talking about....

cant really help you there, it will be my first time in the area....2 of the guys who are going have been up there before, one when he was a boy and rode with his grandpap and he said there are some NARLEY sections of climbing to do, the other was up there 6 months ago and agreed its a 2.5+ trail in many sections. I have been hearing some mixed reports about the area, some say its long and rough, others say its not that bad and not that long.....i dont know who to believe. all i want to do is get out of the heat and enjoy being on the trail all weekend, if it ends up being a shorter run then planned, i will run it in reverse and/or head up to sunflower mine and/or also do four peaks.

Have fun and enjoy yourself, but you won't be high enough to beat any heat. The water will be running into Roosevelt Lake at the begining of the trail in Punkin Center with the recent rains we've had. If it gets too high, they put up the 'road closed' sign.

the PC to young run never happened because the rain made the tonto creek un-crossable so we did sunflower mine
a formitable challenge for a KJ, beautiful trail but the rock gargen can be brutal and damage a real possibility, articulation requirements very high, recommend to remove both sway bars prior to this run.
Must have: a lift, Good off-road tires, skids, hooks, a strap and be OK with AZ pinstripes, locker helpfull but not required, do not attempt alone ONLY go with a group

also did the coves (aka: butcher jones or the rolls)
a fun area to play around in and you can shoot through the sandy washes at 25-30mph (FUN) and drive right up to the water of saguaro lake and take a swim. lots of hill climbs to choose from mild to wild , awesome viewes
stock KJ's can play here but your options will be limited, the surface is very soft and loose sand, stock hight KJ's will drag bottom, suggest thick treaded stock tires or off-road tires, the trails up on the ridges are hardpack and rocky, stock tire damage possible, need carefull tire placement for stock ride height.

and SYCAMORE CREEK
which was an awesome run and would be a great one for lifted KJ's to do. the trails vary from smooth hardpack sand on the ridges to soft loose sand in the washes. the trails snake all over a maze of up and down hill climbs and decents, very narrow in some places and demand the max articulation the KJ can provide when lifted, suggest remove sway bars, Must have: a lift, Good off-road tires, skids, hooks, and be OK with AZ pinstripes, locker helpfull but not required. the creek flow was appx 700cfs and around 3 ft on the USGS water level gauge, this was PERFECT for us to have some fun getting wet, however, DO NOT attempt water crossings alone or wihout the ability to get pulled out immedatly if needed, the sand under the water can swallow you easily as one 08 wrangler rubicon unlimited found out, took 3 jeeps all tow strapped in a line to pull him out! near the end of the trail we literally had to run in the river for a few miles. this trail ends at WidowMaker

as usual i was the only KJ and at the end of the day everyone was impressed at the KJ's abilities.
