AZLOST Trick or Jeep
Ghost town trail and ghost of Cochise
Saturday and Sunday 10/25-26/08
Cochise Stronghold
Friday- Camping friday night in Cochise Stronghold
Saturday- Meet 8:30 am at the camp site, leave camp for trail 9:00 am, tour blacktail canyon, ghost town trail, lunch in Tombstone and sightseeing, Council rock, return to camp for chili feast
Sunday- Optional rock hounding and old mine site run in Middlemarch canyon

Directions:
From West:To reach Cochise Stronghold take Interstate 10 east of Benson to Dragoon exit, take dragoon road east to Highway 191, turn south on 191 to Ironwood road, turn west on Ironwood road to the Stronghold
From East: Take I-10 west past Wilcox to highway 191, turn south on 191 to Ironwood road, turn west on Ironwood road to the Stronghold

The campsite is on Forest road 84b. From the intersection of Ironwood road and FR 84b turn right on FR84b and follow the yellow tape markers to the campsite. FR84b has a yellow smokey bear forest sign at the intersection.

The campsite is primitive dispersed camping. There are numerous sites in close proximity to each other and we'll gather at one central site Saturday night for the chili feast. There is plenty of room for trailers or tent camping. If you prefer there is a developed campground about one mile past the dispersed campsite.

Lodging is available in Benson, Wilcox, or Tombstone. Wilcox is the closest but Benson is not too much farther. Tombstone is farther and requires more time driving dirt road to get to the stronghold. There is also a guest ranch in dragoon called the triangle t. Don't know anything about it but it would be fairly close to the stronghold.

In addition to what Vern stated, I recommend filling up in the town of Sunsites (where Ironwood Rd is located). On Hwy 191, just south of of the Ironwood road is a gas station that was WAY cheaper than what you'll find in Benson. I think it was $3.05 or so. Please make sure you're set for gas BEFORE we take off as we will not be passing any gas stations until Tombstone.

The Cochise Stronghold main campground does have restroom, however there is no running water for showers etc. The cost is $10 a night there (free at the dispersed primitive camp sites). If anybody really wants one of those, let me know. I'm heading up there mid day on Friday and can "reserve" a spot for you. By 5:00 pm this past weekend a majority of the spots were taken.

Again, like Vern said, COSTUMES people. It's a Trick r Jeep theme.

I'll bring plenty of condiments for the chili (saltines, sour cream, cheese, onion)

see ya soon,

Mike
