The AZ LOST JEEPS July run is scheduled for 7-18-09. As usual, all makes and models of Jeeps are welcome, as are other capable 4x4's. Here's another trip to the cool waters of the Verde River to beat the summer heat!! This run starts in Camp Verde and ends in Strawberry. It's an easy trail with a few rough spots on the way down to the Verde River. We'll have lunch and play in the river for awhile (we're gonna grill some hot dogs if anyone wants to share our grill). After lunch, we'll return to Fossil Creek Road and continue east, going by Fossil Creek, and then on into Strawberry. Be warned!! This is an "all day" trip, but well worth it. Why rush home when you're hanging out by a cool, refreshing river, in the middle of a hot Arizona summer with some really good folks?? If the river isn't too high, we can attempt a river crossing or two or three!! So, don't be bashful... pack a lunch, bring plenty of water and don't forget your camera!! It's an AZ LOST JEEPS thing... other folks wouldn't understand!! When: 7-18-09 Trail: Fossil Creek Road (rated easy, but bumpy and a little rocky going down to the river) Meet: McDonald's (3140 W. Carefree Hwy Phoenix) Time: 0830 Roll out: 0900 sharp Length: 8~9 hours (depending on how long we stay at the river) Dinner: Optional... El Rancho Mexican Restaurant in Payson Who's going?? I'm in and I'm going to try to get Ilene to tag along. Wish me luck! I will meet you in Camp Verde and plan to be there around 9:30'ish. You all should roll in around 10 if I calculate correctly. This is gonna be a great one, thanks AJ! |

I'll be at Univ of Phoenix Stadium that day. Hope they have the ac on there. I bet the river would have a much more cooling effect. Have fun on the run though. Mike |

Hey Guys... we need to pick another trail for the July run. I'm canceling the Fossil Creek trip. It's been 7~8 years since Beth and I ran it and we decided to do a pre-run today. In a nutshell, it isn't worth the time and effort. It takes almost two hours to get to the trailhead, and then the trail is nothing but a washboard road with a few rocks tossed in. There were cars doing it, no challenge at all, and not that scenic, except for the last few miles. From the end of the trail in Strawberry it took two hours to get back to East Mesa. The river could of been a nice place to play for awhile, but I think every beer belly, shirtless and tattooed bubba in the state was there, not too mention their overweight babes running around in bikinis. Not a pretty sight. They had every spot along the river staked out. Looks like they had all been there forever. I stopped and talked to one guy who is a regular there. He said the place fills up fast in the summer, and it's mostly a party hardy beer guzzling crowd. The river was low enough to play in, but again... I don't think it's worth the drive up there. Toss out some ideas and we can run another trail in July. Again, sorry guys, this one is a bust. I'm glad Beth and i went up and scouted things out.

How about a revisit of the dupont cabin, cherry creek trail we looked at previously before it got rained out. I'd be willing to set something up for this if you want |

Vern... you got it. I'm not familiar with that trail, but we're in whenever you post it. We've done a couple of trails up there near Young, but that one doesn't come to mind. From what I've seen on a topo the trail turns off 288 to FR 203 and up? If it is, I'll map it on my new garmin 60csx off road unit Wanna do a pre-run or just go for it?. Oh, and thanks for coming up with an alternate trail. This one is way better than Fossil Creek anyday!! AJ |

Lurking on AZVJC I saw this run made - started in Punkin center and finishing at Antler's (Young)- took a whole day but they seemed to have a blast. This sounds like a great selection for LOSTJEEPSAZ in July- I'm for it! Roland |

Roland... if I'm not mistaken, the Cherry Creek trail starts off on route 288, on the east side of Roosevelt Lake. I've run two trails that go from Young to Punkin Center... they weren't Cherry Creek. That's three signed on already!!! oldhockeyvb AZKJ +1 Silverdiesel Come on Vern... post up another thread. I think you may get a good turn out for this!! |

Wanna do a pre-run or just go for it?. Oh, and thanks for coming up with an alternate trail. This one is way better than Fossil Creek anyday!! AJ I was thinking along the lines of what you had proposed last year some time going from punkin center up to the sierra anchas. IIRC it got rained out because the tonto creek was too high. Rain or no rain we'll do a run. If the creek is running too high we'll cross the bridge over the salt and do cherry creek road. If not we'll do punkin center to young highway and see how much time we have left for exploring after that. There are some other trails up in the sierra anchas I've read about New Garmin 60csx, wow, very jealous! No pre-run, we'll just go for it. I'm roughly familiar with the area and between us don't think we'll have any problems Question: How long did it take you to run from punkin center to young highway when you did it before? |

LOL... yeah, a 60csx, ya gonna teach me how to use it? Like you said, they're not all that user friendly unless you spend three days trying to figure it out. Okay, we've ran the trails you're talking about, only from Young to Punkin Center. Don't remember how long it took for the whole trail, but a few miles after turning off of 288 we came to a split. We did the one that goes off to the right our first trip up there in the TJ, so we decided to take the left fork. Well, the KJ was still new, no skids and street tires. It took us 4 hours to go the last 7 miles of the trail. We were lucky to get out without a blown tire. Post up a thread with the dates and times that suit you if you will and we'll be there. |
