Just a short note to say we found a nice camp site for the Dupont Cabin trip this weekend. Oh, and we ran into Vern at the gas station on his way home after he spent the weekend at the Lake.
Now for the rest of the story...
There was a little excitement near the end of today's trip. This is my version and I'm sticking to it!!
After the guys getting me drunk on sarsaparilla or poisoning my cheeseburger at Antler's Cafe... on the way to the bathroom, I was chased into the wilderness by a herd of wild animals. A lion, tiger and a bear (okay, the tiger was really a pig) that were lurking in the back room. After 5~10 miles of being chased, I fell and almost split my skull open on a rock. Dazed and bewildered, I hiked 25 miles out of the wilderness and walked another 15 miles to the hospital. I refused pain killers while they put 33.5 stitches in the back of my head. After the rest of the group had finished partying at Antler's Cafe, they showed up at the hospital to see if I was okay. End of story.
---------------------------------------------
Beth or the others guys may say that's not what happened. Instead... they may tell you, while running Cherry Creek Road on the way home, I was clumsy, stumbled, and from a standing position, fell backwards onto the back of my head. My head hit first and along with the back of my shoulders, they took the full impact of the fall. The fall was so hard that after the back of my head hit a rock, my glasses actually flew off my face and landed a couple of feet away.
I almost passed out and blood was everywhere in a pool behind my head. Beth ripped off her t-shirt to cover the cut while Roland and Alena went after some more things to cover my head. Casey actually lifted all 300 pounds of me off my back and onto my feet with Beth in front helping.
After getting things under control, Roland took the lead blazing a path back to civilization. Beth was driving our Jeep (for the first time) and Casey was close behind. We raced 25 miles back to the air down spot. Casey grabbed his Co2 tank and quickly aired up my tires so Beth could speed me another 15 miles to the hospital. Casey and Roland aired up and raced so fast they actually caught up with me and Beth at the hospital as Beth was helping me out of the Jeep!!
The guys helped walk me to the ER. While Beth was getting me admitted, the others went to clean off my blood that got all over their hands while they were helping me. There was a lot of blood. Beth's t-shirt was completed soaked. I had been bleeding steadily for 1.5 hours.
Just before being taking in for treatment, Roland and Casey asked if I was going to be okay and if Beth needed an more help. With that said, Roland called the run "officially over" and they headed for home.
Guys... Beth and I thank you very much for your help, but more important to me... your "sincere concern" for my well being!! You could of went on your way after airing up my tires, but instead, you raced to the hospital to make sure everything was going to be okay.
--------------------------------------------------
The story could of ended much worse than me getting a few stitches and having a few bruises and a headache.
I am on blood thinners for another medical condition I have. The max the blood can be thinned to is 6.0 whatever measurement they use. Mine was at 5.9. Had it been 6.0 they would have given me what they call "frozen" plasma to try and thicken my blood.
Because my blood was so thin and the severity of the fall onto my head, they were really concerned about internal bleeding inside my skull. If there was, they would of had to Life Flighted me to a hospital in Phoenix for immediate brain surgery to try and stop the bleeding and any swelling they might have found. Fortunately, The CAT scan came back okay and my thick skull saved me from what could of very easily been a serious situation. Before sending me home, both the doctor and nurses said I was a very, very lucky man things turned out the way it did. It could of easily turned out much worse.
Anyway, here are a few pictures to back up "my" version of the story:
Roland and Casey on the trial...
Roland, Beth, Alena and Casey "planning" how to get me drunk on sarsaparilla...
The lion, tiger (well it was really a pig) and bear that chased me out of the cafe and into the wilderness...
After finding me aimlessly wandering around the parking lot, Roland and Casey taking me to the ER...
Thanks again guys for all the help and your concern,
AJ and Beth
