Post subject:  July 18 trail run to dupont cabin and sierra ancha mountains

Who- AZ LOST JEEPS members and guests (That means you)
What- Dupont cabin, sierra ancha mountains run
When- Saturday July 18, 2009, Meet at 8:00 am, roll out at 8:30 am
Where- Tonto Basin Marketplace, 45994 N Highway 188, Tonto Basin, AZ
Why- Why not!
How much- $0

We’ll run from Punkin Center to Dupont cabin, then continue on to the Sierra Ancha mountains where we’ll explore Reynolds Creek and Workman Creek and whatever else we have time for. Bring lunch, water and your camera, this is a beautiful area. It should be cool up on top of the mountains. Return trip will be back down highway 288 to 188 and then your choice left on 188 to 60 or right on 188 to 87.
There is camping on top of the mountains if you want to stay overnight. Not sure how full they get but that would be fun option too for those interested.

This is gonna be the first of many runs I plan to lead in this area of the Tonto Forest (Pleasant Valley District). There are lot’s of neat places there and it’s largely unknown which is cool! I’m working on recruiting some locals to show us around in the future

Lois and I are a maybe. We'd probably tent camp up top (if possible), too.

Edit: Found this link to an AZVJC run there back in May.

Their pictures look great! Tall pines! Looks like they stretched their run into a really long day, though. We'd like to be setting up camp mid afternoon to enjoy it if possible!

That group went to Dupont and PB cabin. We won't be going to PB cabin this trip. I plan to make that another trip by itself. Should be plenty of primitive tent camping opportunities on top, maybe even some developed campground spots. I plan to be back at Roosevelt lake for dinner so should work out perfect for you Todd. Really looking forward to this trip

So.... who is planning on camping? Don't forget fire restictions are in effect.

I might just have my K-10 down here to wheel with....full skids

The only drawback is fuel guzzling :(

This is a different trail than the one AJ led a few weeks back. AJ did the cherry creek road on the east side of the sierra anchas. We will be running forest roads from punkin center up to the sierra anchas stopping at dupont cabin and then playing around a little on the top of the mountain at reynolds creek and workman creek, time allowing. Should be fun, I have never run this trail before so it will be an experience

Here's a link to the Tonto Creek stream flow data. We'll have to keep an eye on the stream in the event of rain to see if it is safe to cross. Even if we can't cross I have a contingency plan for a back way in:

Here's a couple other links to some trail reports that are very cool:

Vern... are we going to have time for a stop at Antler's for lunch? Hope so.

Camping... I talked with Silverdiesel today. We were planning on camping at the Rose CG off of 288 after the run, but due to other commitments, we need to get home Saturday night. We still want to do a one night camping trip up there in a couple of weeks. We're going to talk about it this Saturday and we'll post something after the Dupont Cabin run.

Antlers is a possibility depending on our time allowed. We'll play it by ear, be prepared for lunch on the trail just in case.
I sense another antlers story in the making. Everyone should have one! You know what they say- What happens at Antlers stays at Antlers!

Okay, thanks for the insight. I'll bring a snack for the trail, but I'm planning on heading up to Young after we do the Dupont Cabin trail. That is unless you or anyone else wants to take Cherry Creek Road home instead of going straight down the mostly paved 288.

Like you said, we'll see. It would be a shame to go all the way up there and not fabricate another Antler's Cafe story... :P :D

After Dupont cabin I'm planning to explore Reynolds Creek and Workman Creek on the top of the mountain. That agenda will likely be an all day excursion, we'll find out

Both of those fire roads are relatively short. We ran along side of Workman Creek last weekend looking for camp grounds, but didn't go as far as the fire tower.

Seeing how both FR 487 and 410 are short dead end roads, maybe we'll head up to Antler's after. Unless we spend an extra long time on Dupont Cabin, I can't see that area taking too long to explore.

Anyway... if we don't make it to Young, there's always another day. We'll see what happens. Never know, Antler's may be a little more interesting in the early evening. There was supposed to of been a 16 person fight break out the night before we were there last week.

I've been keeping an eye out on the water level at Tonto Creek, it's been holding steady at 1.53 feet.

Oh, and if you will, bring two B&W decals for me.

Thanks,
AJ

Anybody want to caravan up? We're going up Hwy 87 and cut back on 188.

Post subject:  caravan up from Phoenix!

Set it up AJ!
I will get up extra early and "East Valley Meet Up" with you and anyone else-- Remember We gotta be at Punkin Center Convience Store by 0800 --

Update on minor carnage- sunroof damage-

All it took was a"reset" procedure as the sunroof defaults to half open thinking it caught a kid's hand or something-- I had bits of twigs stuck in the runningtrack from all those low hanging branches on Cherry Creek Road. The panel could not close so it defaults to permanent 1/2 open.

Anyway see you and everyone else Saturday. Be prepared for a gasser/diesel strap party presentation (parts will be removed)--

Roland... it's your call.

We can meet at:

- the Hwy 87 and Bush Hwy exit @ 0645 (no facilities)

- the Chevron Station on the NW corner of Ellsworth and Southern just north of US 60 in Mesa @ 0615.

I'm planning on going up Hwy 87 rather than through Globe. Let me know.

Glad you got the roof fixed!! Oh, and the water level is holding steady at 1.50 feet.... :P
