Unless you are a shopaholic, Black Friday (the day after Thanksgiving) was meant to be spent on the trails, not mall crawling and shopping!!
Beth and I are planning to run Box Canyon (Massey C-41) and exit as the trail is described in his book, or go out via either Telegraph Canyon (Massey C-40) or Battleaxe Trail (Massey C-44). The trail is rated a solid 5 for a couple of ledges that do not have a bypass in Box Canyon and some rocky and deep ruts in Telegraph Canyon. If we go out through Battleaxe Road, we will have to run a portion of the Coke Ovens Trail (Massey C-43) which is rated 7 for some steep ledges.
A lifted KJ with good A/T tires, tow hooks and full skids is highly recommended. Stock height KJ's can do these trails, but may have to take a strap in a couple of places.
When: Nov 27 '09
Meet: McDonald's in Florence
Depart: 0900
Trail: Box Canyon (Massey C-41, rated 5)
Length: 4~8 hours (depending on which way we exit)
There are a couple of gas stations in Florence. Please grab your snacks and fuel up before we leave McDonald's. I'd like to leave by 0900 sharp.
NOTE: A State Trust Land Permit is required for this trip. The southern leg of the trail runs through State Trust Land. Permits are $15.00 for individuals, or $20.00 for families. They are valid for 1 year. There's a big fine if you're caught on State Trust Land without a permit.
If you need to purchase a permit, you can get one at:
