Beth and I are running Walnut Canyon (Wells #57, rated medium).

It's a loop trail that skirts the White Canyon Wilderness Area on the north and the Gila River to the south. The trail head is located a few miles south of Superior, on Hwy 177 and Battle Axe Road.

When: Jan 17, 2010
Time: : Leaving at 0900 sharp
Meet: Shell Station in Gold Canyon
Length: 20 miles, 5~6 hours

Good A/T tires, skids and tow hooks recommended. If you're interest, post up....

i'd love to go. Although I may have to move things around to make it on the 17th. The 16th might work better...

I think I can make that, barring it doesn't snow. At which point I'll be skiing!

Vern... if your coming up from Tucson, it may be better for you to meet us at the trail head.

I may have a guest to bring along. A guy that I met via Xbox Live lives here in North Phoenix and says he is interested in getting his wrangler back on the trail. I invited him - he is tentatively committed at the moment...

Rex, Roland, Beth and myself did a pre-run of Walnut Canyon today. This has to be one of the best kept secrets in the Florence Juction area!! It's really one heck of a scenic trail with enough rocks and rutted areas to keep it interesting and slow going. It took us right at 6.5 hours to cover 20 miles, which included a stop for lunch in a sandy wash.

Note: for all the folks who haven't signed up to attend this run on the 17th, you'll be missing out on a really cool trail. Hope to see more people sign on for this one.

The view at the beginning of the trail, and it gets even better further in....

Thanks guys for coming out today to help me and Beth pre-run this trail!! We can't wait to do it again on the 17th!! :SOMBRERO:

This is what it is all about folks!!!
Arizona desert scenery thats better than any magazine shot,
A solid 2.8 trail that is great to run,
Perfect length time wise !!!
I think those jvc guys run this one as it is close to "Battle Ax Road" and "Coke Ovens" and this is one of those trails that Jeep group refuses to give out coordinates.
Well here it is as an open to all, welcome all, AZLOST Jeeps event and this one is worth it!! :D :D See everyone on the 17th.

Roland

This trail was no joke - It was probably one of the most scenic and fun trails I have done. I'm still pretty new at this, but I can easily say that this trail was challenging without being overwhelming. I can't wait to go back!

AJ --

My grandpa passed away this morning. The funeral is going to be in Snowflake on 1/16. Not sure if I'm gonna make it on 1/17. I'm about 90% sure I'm gonna miss this run. Still on for Sat 1/9 to bulldog canyon.

Rex... sorry for your loss. You and your family will be in our thoughts. If you want to reschedule Bulldog, it's not a problem, and don't push it on the 17th. We can run that again too any time you want... I really liked that trail. Keep us posted.

AJ and Beth

Hey Rex,

Sorry for your loss. You had mentioned about your Grandpa's situation during lunch on the prerun.
There will be plenty of other times for Jeeping but now is a good time to care for your family. We wlll run Walnut again and I will be happy to go along and join.

Roland

Hello everyone! I am new to the LostKJ forum, but an Arizonan with a newly acquired KJ! I am interested in going out on runs with you guys, I just don't know what difficulty of trail I can hit with stock wheels and tires. I do have a 2.5" daystar lift in front with 2.5" Skyjacker coil and Rancho shocks in back. Oh and I do have skids. But I am burdened with the stock Goodyear tires. Think this Walnut Canyon run would be to challenging for my rig? Thanks and hope to meet you all!

Eric

Welcome to AZ LOST JEEPS!! We're looking forward to meeting you too. When you have time, look back through some threads from out past runs and events... you'll be hooked and there will be no turning back.

The Walnut Canyon trail is rocky, rutted and sandy... it has a little bit of everything. Trails are rated on a scale of 1~5, with 5 being difficult. Silverdiesel in his post above rated this one a solid 2.8, which makes it a good medium rated trail. You'll have no problems with your lift and skids, but like you said, your tires are your weakest point right now. Take another look at all the pictures above and the two I attached below. If you feel comfortable with what you see, then come on out. I've seen people run rockier trails than this one on stock tires, but then you never know when you'll blow a tire... even an off road tire.

Hmmmm, well I may have to sit this one out. I have a strange rattle coming from the back right wheel area anytime I hit bumps. From previous posts on this forum it looks like a ball joint may be shot or something? So I have to look into that. Plus I have not fabricated a brake line relocation bracket for the rear since I installed the lift. I would be afraid to allow my rear axle to flex too much with the break line the way it is now. That trail looks pretty awesome though! So if I can get my problems fixed I will attempt it! I'll let ya know soon as I do.

Thanks for the welcome to the group!

eric welcome to lost jeeps, if you have a rattle coming from the rear it should not be a ball joint as those are just on the front (if anyone has any better info let me know) you should be fine with the tires if you wanna run it i was almost stock when i ran this trail it is a great trail.

i am a strong maybe with a possible plus one vehicle, good thing i get sundays off now :)
