I'm off that day and want to try out my new gps unit. Maybe Chiva Falls?

Vern,

I'm potentially interested if you think I could do it without rock rails. I want to install some in 2011, but it's not happening immediately.

We have taken several stock libertys to the falls in years past. It has been a few years ago though so I have not seen the trail condition lately. There is really only one bad spot right at the beginning and there are bypasses around it. It is pretty much solid rock at that spot so washouts are not really a concern. Your lockers will come in very handy at that spot due to a hole where the rear tire goes on the return trip. My main concern at this point is weather related. The canyon leading to the falls is not a good place to be if there are rainstorms upstream. We'll have to play it by ear. If that doesn't look good I can think of some other trails that would be fun. Like copper creek, and rice peak for starters. Maybe even a short run up to the mini-moab part of charleaou gap. Nothing too scary to that point, it's later on the gap trail gets really rough.

OK, that sounds do-able. I'll plan on going out on Thursday.

I'm in the middle of installing a CB. It's clear now I'm going to need a coax adapter (female Motorola to male PL-259, or something like that). Not sure if I'll be able to get ahold of / fabricate that by Thursday. We'll see.

We were at the TTT today for lunch and went to the CB shop afterwards where I bought the radio and an antenna spring. I figured there would be interconnect problems.

I'm sure the CB shop has or can fab a 3-ft cable with the right genders (male-to-female). What I'm doubting is that they will have an adapter to go from a Motorola-type plug (OEM antenna cable from the fender) to an PL-259 plug, as required by the Firestik AR-1A splitter.

I went ahead an ordered a double-female connector to change the gender of the cable and the Motorola/PL-259 adapter from Wolcott, with next day air (should be here on Wednesday).

I still may stop by the TTT and get a cable with the right genders as I'll probably need another cable anyway for an SWR meter for tuning. A friend with an SWR meter said he would help tune it over the weekend. Or maybe I'll buy an SWR meter at the CB shop or Radio Shack and tune it myself on Wednesday.

SWR meter is $45 from Radio Shack. Reasonable, but I've already spent enough money on this project. I had to buy a stupid tap set for $32 or something when all I really needed was a single 3/8-24 tap. They (Sears) didn't have a single 3/8-24 so I had to buy the set.

Assuming I get it all together, I'll operate un-tuned on Thursday and then tune it over the weekend with my friend's SWR meter.

I'm getting excited about this trip. Major potential for some fabulous photo ops with the snow in the desert if we play our cards right!

The CB install is mostly done. The antenna is in. The CB is in and has power. It turned out that the jumper cable that I had wasn't long enough anyway, so I went to the TTT and got a longer cable made plus a gender changer.

So now the only part missing is the Motorola-type radio to CB PL-251 adapter. That was shipped by Walcott CB next day air and according to tracking info should be delivered on Wednesday. Hopefully that will be delivered in time for me to run to the TTT and get it tuned. Or try to scare up an SWR meter. I've become a little paranoid about operating it without tuning.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to Thursday!

Ernie

Drats!!
I have to work- just got back from Xmas vacation and work has piled up!
Get pics! and get pics especially if there is snow !!!

Gonna post something soon for this area but I would like to make all that I can!!

Darn Tucson being do far and have to work! Grrr!

Draco: hope that CB set up works. I did mine with to make sure the unit had a front speaker as it was mounted on the side of the console on pass side; did an antenna mount on the cross bar holding the top basket; and simply did plug and play and it works great!
Only thing is I am going through mic's- on my fourth one now.

Have fun

Roland

Hello Roland,

Sorry you couldn't be there, it turned out to be a great day.

I'm going to reduce the size of some of my pictures and post them here and/or the Past Trail Runs and Trip Reports section.

In the mean time, here are all of my pictures in full size:

http://digitalvault.cox.net/invite/login?c=65646661737365&i=3bd2-12d04e4be2c-coxprod_gemini_canniff37&t=3e1b6f8ddca6146&r=mg&lang=en

To get the full effect hit the "Slideshow" button.

I'm pretty tired so that's it for now.
