This list will be modified and expanded as information and suggestions are submitted.

Basic Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests OHV Trail information can be found here:

OHV Riding & Camping

One of the most important general sources here is the Motor Vehicle Use Maps found here which provide the most up to date and comprehensive source for currently open Forest Service (FS) Roads in the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests:

Motor Vehicle Use Maps

A quick note on the use of these maps: My experience with the use of these maps is that they are very good for the actual FS Roads themselves but are horrible for planning how to get to them. A good general map of Georgia PLUS county-specific County Road Maps (available from a specific county's Chamber of Commerce) are necessary to find many of these places. Even the GPS coordinates provided on the map page edges only get you into the general area.

The three remaining USFS OHV Areas in Georgia that are usable by 4WD vehicles are --

Beasley Knob

Tatum Lead NOTE: Only can enter with 4x4s from FS631 (off of GA-52). 4x4s can NOT traverse FS3A!!!

Rocky Flats

For the current status of all USFS maintained OHV trails and recreation areas in GA go here:
Recreation Condition Reports

NEW!!! A new 2010 Chattahoochee-Oconee Forest Service Motor Vehicle Use Map Book (released 10/1/2010) is located here:

Greg's link here provides better directions and contact information than the USFS website does for how to get to each of these locations and for contacting the appropriate ranger station if necessary.

Here's some GOOD news, for once!

Here is current information from

Diana Mullen
Conasauga Ranger District
3941 Hwy 76
Chatsworth, GA 30705
706-695-6736 Ext. 0
dlmullen@fs.fed.us
http://www.fs.usda.gov/conf

REGARDING TATUM LEAD:

Quote:
Tatum Lead is still open for 4x4 vehicles. The first two miles of this road coming off GA highway 52 are through private land, so you must drive a licensed vehicle until you reach national forest land (red blaze).

Also, I have noticed that some websites show the trail closed January through March, but this trail is open year-round. For more information on this and other recreation areas on the Chattahoochee Oconee National Forest, you can access our website at http://www.fs.usda.gov/conf.

REGARDING ROCKY FLATS:

Quote:
You are correct that the Rocky Flats information does not mention that you can drive full sized vehicles, but you are allowed to do so on that trail as well. Apologies for that information being left off. We are currently working on all the recreation information on our website to bring everything up to date. Rocky Flats is also a year-round trail.

The Tatum Lead Trail description does mention being suitable for 4x4 vehicles (see the box below). This information is available by clicking the plus sign on that page beside OHV Trail Riding, but again, as we continue to update, that will be more readily seen at the top of the page.

I checked the Motor Vehicle Use Maps, and the description under "Seasonal and Special Vehicle Descriptions" for both Rocky Flats (630-D) and Tatum Lead (631) say that they are open to all vehicles except tracked.

I was able to contact an acquaintance who has been working with the FS first hand on the Beasley Assessment - Just wanted to share this rare GOOD news about OHV use in Georgia.

I sit on the RTP committee that approved the funds for the assessment.

And, I’ve sat with the Forest Supervisor for many hours. He feels that Beasley Knob IS an appropriate place for OHV trails.

I spent 2 weeks walking the trails in Beasley Knob with the Forest Service and the President of the Professional Trail Building Association during the assessment. We documented every inch of every trail. How wide is it? How steep is it? How deep are the walls? We GPS’d it with $6,000 GPS units strapped to our backs. And, it rained most of the time…what fun. LOL. Then the team looked at possible new trail sections to create loops. And, at what sections may need to be closed or re-routed. A report will be generated for the Forest Service offering professional advice and ideas. Then the Forest Service will decide what to do first, second, third, etc. It will depend on the time and budget they have.

The report is due in January. There will be public Scoping letters available before any work is done.

On a side note, I’ve introduced a few of the Georgia Cruiser’s officers to the Forest Service Ranger for the Chattooga District. We met and looked over the maps. The Cruiser guys are supposed to be out scouting trails…

GaDOT county maps can be pretty useful for just messing about on local FS roads.
You can order one for free (here), but after that you'll have to pay for fullsize ones. You can get the PDF versions for free all the time though.
Also, if you guys ever wanted more people to go along, there is a fair amount of interest at this (don't kill me) 4Runner forum.
