I just picked up a neglected KJ CRD under the assumption that the motor is bad. I pulled the head and found that coolant has sat in the cylinders for months and has turned into a sludgy mess. I am hoping to find a wreck with a good engine where I can hear it run.

If it's just the liners, get a new set with pistons and rings. Better in the long run, and probably cheaper too.

Hi foxhunter. Thanks for the lead on the engine in MO. I actually saw that one a while back and have communicated with the owner several time via email. I am just reluctant to buy it without being able to inspect it myself as you suggested. I think I would have to buy it with the assumption that I would need to do the rockers/lifters, head gasket and ARP studs at a minimum.

Hi GordnadoCRD. Thanks for the suggestion to replace the liners, pistons, and rings. That is something that I have been considering as well. I do question whether or not it would end up being cheaper to just buy a remanufactured long block from Mopar. I had my mechanic price one out with his discount and it would cost me $4900 plus tax for the remanufactured long block right from the dealership and they would deliver it to his shop. He is a friend of mine and offered to get it for me at his cost.
I am thinking it would cost me a good bit more than that to have this engine rebuilt by the time I bought all the parts and paid the labor.

Even if it is not cheaper you would have a manufacturer's warranty behind it for a while. The only recommended internal thing you would lack is ARP head studs, and you could do those at your first timing belt change.

That is a very good point GordnadoCRD.
BTW.. I see in your sig that you have the Sasquatch turbo. I would need a turbo for mine if I decide to move forward with this project. I saw the Sasquatch turbo is a couple hundred $$ less than the OE and was wondering if you like it and would recommend it?

I would definitely buy it again if I needed one.

There are two others I may consider should that need arise, and those are the two (that I know of) roller-bearing turbos.
One, being the GreenDieselEngineering turbo that comes with it's own tune. (Not cheaper)
Two, being the upgraded ball-bearing turbo that Diesel_Guy86 is developing. (Also very likely not cheaper)
