has anyone changed their rubber hoses to stainless wire braided lines? (im guessing they are plain rubber)

i wonder if this would increase the piston caliper force enough to make the brakes stop better in this application and not just the usual improvement in pedal feel

I don't know how much that would help. I do know that the Powerslots I put on the front of my KJ made a huge difference. Still have the drums in back, but it stops on a dime compared to when it was stock.

Yes braided lines will help, they will flex less than the stock rubber hoses.

I didn't know that. I guess I should check mine to see if they are dry rotting like so many of the other hoses have done. May have a good excuse to upgrade to some braided other than better braking, which is actually quite good on mine right now.

I had the Hawk pads on it until the other day. Way too squeaky and dusty though. I just moved to the semi-metallics from Midas. They don't stop quite as well, but they don't sound like I need a brake job really bad. The combination now works a lot better than stock.

I always thought the Hawk Ceramics put out less dust? Thats always been the pad that Ive wanted to get.. :?

Would I be better off to get the Semi's?

Do you know what Jeep used stock? I never have any brake dust and the stopping seems to be good.

I had the Hawk HPS High Performance Street Brake Pads. They really stopped it, but squeaked very badly and were the dustiest brake pads I've ever had. I've just got the Midas semi-metallic pads installed for under $100 with a lifetime warranty now. They don't stop quite as hard, but considerably better than stock. Also remember that mine is one of the very early KJ's with drums in the rear.

My '03 came with ceramic pads as stock. Very little to no dust, and no sqeaking at all, even as they were worn down to replacement thickness.

I read on a few forums that thats what they come with from the factory. I also have very little dust and the braking is great if I may say so. Ive never been 100% sure thats what they came with though..

Ceramics have that advantage... no sound, low dust. However, semi metallic usually work better (depending on quality ofcourse) than ceramics. The Hawk pads are some of the best value for the performance brake pads around. I have them on my 3000gt. They work suprisingly better than the last 4 types of pads I have used. If you want performance, but dont mind cleaning a mess now and then, they are def worth it. That in addition to upgraded rotors works WONDERS for brakes.

ON topic - stainless lines are a great benefit. They usually last much longer than a rubber hose (again based on quality) and dont flex at all. The rubber over time expands due to extreme heat of the brake fluid (sometimes in excess of 500 degrees). That can create a weak pedal, you hit the brakes but they dont bite like they used to. Sometimes referred to as a type of brake fade. Stainless lines work really well to combat that. Consider a better fluid when changing them.. Dot 4 or 5, if, of course, the system allows for it.
