Hi, everyone. I'm new to the Jeep world. I see a lot of Jeep owners have a lot of fun in the mud and I just wanted to see if I can join in on the fun with a 2WD. Anyone ever gone off roading w/ a 4X2? Do we 2WD's stand a chance?

I hear that if we install lockers we can get pretty far. Any locker recommendations for a 2005 Rennie?

Yes, You can get farther than you can ever imagine. The limitation will be on the extremes where you need the front wheels pulling you over an obstacle.

Anywhere I've wanted to go so far, It's done it. Beach, Mud, ugly steep muddy hills, Rocks, or the Mall.

If you have the $$$ get the ARB airlocker...You'll love it.

Everybody knows I ain't fond of the powertrax No-slip...It is awsome off road though.

You can always try backing thru an obstacle.

Just keep the momentum and don't stop.

For all around pleasure, I recommend the detroit tru-trac above all, especially for the way it handles wet pavement. No gadgets, noise, clutches, extras. Its the SHIZ-NIT!!!

Hope it doesn't come to a disappointment, but I'm not a soldier; referred to these days as an "Army Civilian" (it's what it says on my ID card).
But I do really appreciate the gestures.

I'm still trying to figure out which one of these Detroit lockers I need and which ones work with my KJ (getting tiresome; recommendations?)... but I noticed the prices started at around $279.

the1jferg, would you trust a local mechanic around here to install one of these?

"would you trust a local mechanic around here to install one of these? "

They are far more skilled than U.S. (my opinion), they could actually build you a locker if they had one to copy. Heck they even have pride in their work an make less money.

I bet they could build you a set of rock rails too for chump change.

I still recommend the detroit true-trac. If you are going to go with the lunchbox type you might want to consider that powertrax noslip. Most folks with your rear axle seem to be very happy with it.

You would also need to add a front differential, either a solid axle, or the stock IFS Dana 30 aluminum unit. Then you'd need CV axles for the IFS too, along with a front driveshaft. Plus alot of other little things, electronics, etc. But that's the main hardware. If you go solid axle, it would be more capable off-road, but it would basically be a fully custom conversion at this point, since we still do not have an aftermarket conversion "kit" available for the Liberty yet. Custom front driveshaft and steering setup, along with custom suspension. Check out the link on the SFA KJ 4X4 page. Wally is having his KJ converted right now.

Do not put a non-selectable locker in the rear of a 2WD...it will affect street driving and you will not be able to turn it off. If it rains or if the streets are snow/ice covered you will be swapping ends (read-spin) before you know it. With 4WD it works (especially with Selec-Trac) because you can have the fronts working on slippery road conditions in conjunction with the rear locked. ARB selectable locker would be the best option for 2WD.

Darby, Where were you when I was getting hammered about the PowerCrax no-slip and its dangers???

I agree if you have the 8.25 to go with one of the better options.

I can't break my no-slip loose with Destination A/T's enough to swap ends...It grabs like hell though. (even in our fresh rain slick conditions)

It still sucks (on-road) compared to the Tru-trac and you have to relearn driving habits. The no-slip can be dangerous.
