Gears???

I just put on my lift and 245/75r16 a/t's and lost quite a bit of low end power. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas of what gearing i should go with to get that off the line power back, but heres the kicker... i drive ALOT of hiway miles every day and dont want to loose the hiway mpg. I dont mind loosing 2 or 3 mpg if it helps. ANY suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Update: it is 2wd and I have the Chrysler 8.25 axle with 3.73 gears if that changes anything.

There is a whole ton of posts over in the 4X4 section regarding regearing, 4.10s is about the only option or best one, well unless you are a 2 wheel drive :wink:

but only 4.10s available for the front as an option. If you went to bigger tires you would not loose MPGs you will actually gain since you will be putting the power band back to stock, but check out the other posts :wink:

If you're a 2x4 you can go to 4.56 in the rear. The front doesn't need regearing because there is no axle there!! That will give you some more power!! Might loose some MPGs, though.

4.10s with the 245 75s would be enough, if you are going to a taller tire then you could go deeper in gears, also you can maybe go a little higher in lift since you do not have the CVs to deal with, would be fun to build a 2X4 KJ

I always thought that too!! No CVs, no gearing limitation, no weak aluminum axle to deal with...put a detroit locker or arb in the rear and you could go a lot of the places a 4x4 can.

thanks guys. Sounds like the 4.10's are the way to go. I already got the limited slip just need the gears.

Ok guys, so that's the boat I'm in right now...2WD that is. Looking in to my options on gears/Lockers.. All i hear is 4.10s.. What other options for lockers do i have? ARB....?? And? Looking for something that i can take in/out ie electric, air, etc... Thanks in advance.

well your 2wd so you can do 4.10, 4.46, 4.88 etc. your best bet is 4.10 or 4.56 if you have bigger tires and lots of armor. As for lockers that you can lock and unlock like your talking, ARB is the only one I know of for the 8.25.

Just out of curiosity why wouldnt you want something like the DL?

Well the Detroit is totally out. If that's what you meant by DL? Would like something i can lock and unlock cause its the daily driver... Armor and rails would be soon to come.

yes thats what I meant by DL, have you talked to anyone with one? I have a DL in my KJ and its my DD I do lots of city and highway driving and I cant tell its there. Also Rayman975 and there is one more I know of that has a DL in their DD from this forum.

yeah there are several people on here that have the powertrax no-slip, there is also the Aussie which is only $300 plus shipping and its the same basic design and 2006 KJ has one and a couple others, but IMHO its worse than the DL and you cant unlock it either.

ive had 2 DL's, one on a bronco II and one on a super cheyenne
the bronco II is about the same size as our jeeps, same size tires but weighs less, i rarely heard my DL click in it for the 6 months I had it

the cheyenne on the other hand, sounded like a 3/4 drive ratchet according to people outside the vehicle but it had 44's on it, couldn't really hear anything but the motor inside the vehicle

if you DID decide to give the DL a try, i'm willing to bet someone here would buy it off you if you didn't like it

it's just one of your many options, most clutch driven LSD's don't last more than 50k miles and still work very well, i haven't had my DTT long enough to know how it stands up over the long haul

You need to figure out whether you have an trak-loc installed from the factory or if it is an open axle. There should be a green tag on the end of the axle, by the brakes that tell you. A better option would be Detroit True-trac.

they last, TJKJ has had his in for several years and wheeled it hard and I have had mine in for over a year and no problems what-so-ever, plus you know its going to last and be an extremely well made product just from the company thats makes them

X2 on the DTT, and the open carrier or trak-loc you must know to make sure you get the correct one, I would recommend the Aussie over the Powertrax.

No,they make them for the rear 8.25.The DTT works much better in front applications though.I'd just get the rear Detroit Locker and be done with it,it will out last the KJ,has over 40 years of testing so it is tried and true,and is stronger then a lunchbox style locker.Yes it cost's more to install since it is a full carrier replacement but in the long run you will be much happier with it then a lunchbox locker.
