anyone ran the xp iridium autolites?

i pulled the ngk irids that i had 10k on and figured i'd try out the xp irid autolites for a few k before putting in the autolite plats

i seem to be getting a bit more spark noise in my CB with them than i did with the ngk's

i checked RS a few weeks ago for a line filter and they didn't have one at the one i went to

i ordered a line filter a few days ago along with some other goodies, hopefully itll cut back on the alt/fuel noise and the spark popping noise

noone else have any experience with these plugs? they're loud as @&#% and popping in my stereo

i did the old school test for plug/coil leaks with my hand and didn't get shocked

i'm going to take my best NGK that had just under 10k on it tomorrow and cycle it through until i find whichever one has a bad ceramic, i guess i'll start by pulling the coil wire one at a time till the noise goes away and hopefully narrow it down

well i pulled every coil wire today one at a time with a code reset in between and came up with nothing other than the apparent fact that it's no one particular plug that the plugs are just loud as hell

it's not picking up any misfires, which usually when you get this kind of noise, you've got a bad wire or a jacked up ceramic but that also causes random misfires too and it's apparently not getting that,

troy if ya read this, how many misfires does it take in a given period for it to register a misfire?

I don't have a problem with them bein loud considering that it's seriously running like a bat out of hell

don't give me the whole new plugs b.s. either because if ya read the first post the NGK irids were in for less than 10k, which was only about a month and a half ago

put the amsoil air filter in and it started runnin even better

still don't have *#*% over 4500 though :)

needs a cam and headers :D

the pop has the same tempo and increase with rpms as the vacuum doohicky to the front of the battery

having the cb actually was useful in the diagnostics because when i turned the RF down and turned the volume all the way up i could hear the pop pop pop with the door open standing infront of the jeep

Alright, since noone else has offered any input i did a little experiment today

used my CB as a feedback gauge

Autolite XP Iridiums resulted in a 1 pound popping spike

Autolite Double Platinums resulted in roughly 1/10th or less of a pound popping spike

after putting in the AL DP's and getting the lower feedback levels, I decided to pull them again and put the XP iridiums back in and see if it went right back to a 1 pound spike and it did, so i put the AL DP's back in and retested and it's back at 1/10th or less popping spike

Either my coils are 'aged' and not capable of producing the necessary voltage to drive the AL DP's or the AL DP's are slightly too hot of a plug

I'm going to run it as is for 10k like i did the NGK iridiums and pull them and see what they look like and probably try a set of regular autolite platinums or a different iridium plug

but for my vehicle with it's current engine setup, ngk iridiums weren't cutting it, it was stumbling at 4000 and 4600

if this crap keeps up i'm going to end up ordering the stupid expensive performance coils and sticking ground straps on the engine compartment and exhaust

Mike.. I'm sorry I told you the Double Platinums.. I just got the Platinums.. I will tell you my jeep Idles now at 750rpms? I think I'll check tonight...But as far as the noise I think you might have a grounding problem.. Where are you grounding to?

well whats bogglin me, is the autolite XP that i used, is a colder plug than what autolite says is their equivalent to the NGK that i was using, the ngk was a step hotter(accorng to the heat chart) than the autolite that i used that was too hot

in otherwords, the xp i used was colder than the ngk that i replaced

but that's not what the vehicles electrical behavior was telling me

There is really no set # of misfires to turn the check engine light on,it takes a combination of failures to trip the check engine light and throw a misfire code.I generally read misfires(via livedata on a scanner) at 3000rpms over a 60 second period, anything less then 5 is pretty good but zero is better. The PCM on the KJ with a 3.7 will ignore the knock sensors at idle. There can be many factors in higher "radio" noise with Iridium plugs, typically they are more efficient and harder to shield there "radio" noise. In your case it sounds like your coils are close to being shot due to severe breakup after 4500rpms,bad or wearing coil drivers in the PCM can be at fault also. Can and crank sensors can effect spark performance.

the ngk's looked great when i pulled them, after 300 road miles on the XP's they looked like crap

i think im going to junk both sets of autolites in the trash and put the ngk's back in and wait until about 2-3 months and i'll get new coils

you're probably right, like i said to someone earlier, the double plats probably woulda been fine if my coils were new, but they aren't and they're having trouble pushing the AuDP's

just gonna have to do it with one hand, almost ripped my thumbnail off on one side earlier

side question incase ya know,

how come ya gotta have a DIS-4 and a DIS-2 to do a 6cyl, thats 1200 bucks of ignition coils

the digital-6 is only 350

i lost my lead on performance coil on plug for the 3.7

NGK ZFR6FIX-11 Irridiums they're warmer plugs than either of the autolites but cooler than the ones i had in it

figured i'd try a 2nd different set of NGK's before I tried regular autolite plats

still a very tiny bit of noise, but the noise seems to be going away the more i drive it

i think the noise was a combo of the coils getting weak, and difference in the autolite double plats and the xp irids versus the ngk irid's shielding

i'm an autolite guy, always have been, but in practice i use what works for me and it's not always what works for everyone else

stumbling/hesistation at 4000 & 4500 = eliminated

before i say i found my plugs for good for this one, i'll say i'll be doing another one of those 10K mi runs on them, i simply couldn't bear to do a 10K mi test with the autolites that i had picked out if anyone wants those double plats for whatever reason i'll bubble wrap them and mail them to you

the autolite xp irids are apparently worthless for our 3.7's, i have heard however that they're quite nice if you have a msd or accell set but after just a few hundred miles, they looked like they'ed been in there 30K just don't have the electrical-balls to push them i suppose
