I was wondering if anyone has ever removed the padding from under their hood. I assume it's to reduce engine noise. Is it for anything else besides that? Would it be a bad idea to remove it? I'm not planning on doing so, just curious.

Did you notice an increase in engine noise while driving around?

Here's another strange question...does the padding absorb more heat from the engine. It seems like it would act like a blanket and make it much hotter under the hood. The reason I'm asking is cause I have the K&N intake and want to reduce engine heat in order to get cooler air into the intake.

I finally took off the padding yesterday. Didn't really notice that much of a difference in sound. I have no idea why the factory even installs them and what purpose they serve.

Sound deadening and to insulate the hood is about the only reason they put that stuff on. Back in the day i had a Chevy truck that was one of the earliest uses of the hood insulation, i can say the paint on the hood lasted longer on that truck than my previous one. You will notice the hood gets a LOT hotter on some vehicles without that insulation, don't know on the KJ as i don't have any plans to remove mine.

If you remove that insulation then i would put in some louvers to keep the heat off the hood by flushing it out with airflow.

My last vehicle was an '01 Camaro SS and had no insulation under the hood since it had ram air. That engine ran a lot hotter than the KJ. I doubt it would give any problems to the KJ.

i took mine off 2 years ago, every time i would go through water or deep crossings, that stuff would get soaked and hang down, drip water all over the motor making steam come out under the hood for long periods of time. glad its gone!

I doubt it does any sound reduction, mainly what they are for is to block the heat away from the hood so the paint doesnt fade as fast.

I have always been told that padding is there for two reasons, as sound deading, but more importantly as a fire retardant incase you have an electrical fire up there. it like melts down and puts it out....not sure if this is true....never tested it out ;)

In AZ it is hotter outside of the engine bay than inside....sometimes when I am burning up in the middle of summer I crawl under the hood of my freshly driven KJ to cool off. :ALONE:

One thing I noticed is my air horns are much louder! :D This means that the padding is definitely used for sound reduction.
