Post subject:  Exhaust Systems
OK so most people all can agree or somewhat agree on types of parts taht are both good and bad for KJ's. Here's my question. I see everyone with different exhaust systems. Everything from full exhaut systems to just mufflers. What's the deal?
Is one type better then the other? And what is this that I hear about the KJ's requiring alot of back pressure? I read and have been told that alot of these systems make it so free flowing that it gets ride of the back pressure (or at least alot of it) and you lose alot of low end torque. I like my torque.
So I ask What's the deal?

Yea, im looking for a new exhaust too. From what I know, exhaust systems makes up their power in the higher rpm range, I havent heard about loosing low end torque tho. Im not exactly sure how the low amount of backpressure at low rpms would help the engine much. In terms of what muffler to get, ive had this discussion before. After my friend (Savagess27) and I did a lot of research we found that the flowmaster 50 series muffler seems to be the best. Its less restraint on the engine to help performance, built solid for off roading, and has a great deep sound that flowmasters is famous for.

Yes, we have had this dicussion before, Riptide was leaning hard on the Magnaflow system....until he heard it that is...it's not exactly the sound we're looking for...makes the V-6 Liberty sound like and I-4 Civic with about 5HP and 2.5 ft-lbs. of torque....now if that's what you're into, than i mean no offense...but i like a deep throaty sound that lets you know just how powerful the KJ really is...Now one of the things i like most about it is that it's about half the size of the stock muffler, all you really have to do is replace the muffler as the rest of the piping in the truck is already mandrel bent 2.5" stuff...(the good stuff). In fact, i think the muffler shop will need to add about 8 to 12 inches of pipe into the exhaust system to make up for the smaller (lighter and also more durable) Flowmaster unit. I don't have one installed yet, but it will be my next mod. Soon to be followed by Mopar skids and some rock rails i hope...Good luck on your choice and let us know how it works out...pics, video and or audio are always a plus :D

How do you all connect the muffler up? i would hate to cut that connector off right before the muffler, i would like to have the option to put the oe one back on.

If you don't wanna cut and weld, you're gonna have to go for a cat-back system. Those just bolt on, and are much more $$$$$$

Most seem to go for the flowmaster 50 series. Its the one Rustys chooses for thier exhaust system. It also give out a nice deep tone without being too loud.

hmmm that looks good and all but i don't trust the fact the my exhaust is going to be more vulnerable to being smaked while off roading if i use those straighter piping.

I think it'd be nice if it was possible with some element of ease to replace the stock muffler with the flowmaster 50 series and use the stock piping.

Am I on to something or am I just worrying too much?

Well I know that you can but I think I remember hear that it was expencive. You can go to like mineke and get a flowmaster 50 series installed with the stock piping. If I remember it cost 90 for the muffler and 120 for the install. Come to think of it that's less then the rusty's one. Hmmmmmmmm That's something to think about.

Well for those who go offroading with their exhaust systems, how easy/difficult is it to bend or dent any part of the exhaust system?

On a stock KJ it's pretty easy to dent the muffler. It's just the simple fact that if you get onto some big rocks or something that you don't have the ground clearance for it will get dented. (in that case plan on having full skids and some bolderbars too.)

This subject was covered not too long ago. I remember being told that gas and CRDs are using the same muffler, and that there is a "choke down" in diameter just before the stock muffler. OE exhaust systems are designed largely with noise reduction in mind, and of course emissions. I have found that reducing (read: NOT ELIMINATING) backpressure is benificial to power. When done properly along with a free flowing air filter/box (or tube), an exhaust upgrade can make a noticeable difference. I have had a Flowmaster on my TJ for well over 100,000 miles and it only sounds better with time. The Flowmaster that I'm looking at for my Libby is also available in a single in/dual out configuration. Going for the Borla look with the Flowmaster quality :D

Just got off of the phone with Nick @ Flowmaster. He said to avoid the 4cyl buzz sound, use the "50 SUV".
