I've been researching the best way to do a CAI and so far I've seen the best combo is the stock box, an Amsoil filter, and LTT's custom intake tube.

I've been thinking about this, and had a few ideas I want to try, but I want to run them by everyone here first. Would it be possible to, instead of using a flat filter, use a conical filter attached to the intake tube inside the stock (or modified) airbox? From everything I have read more cold air equals more power. So if you were to wrap your stock box in heat wrap, replace the restrictive stock air tube with a better flowing, heat wrapped tube, use LTT's intake system, and an enclosed conical filter would that be the best possible setup aside from a true ram air system?

In theory it may seem like it would be a good idea.
The KJ gets enough air from a flat filter to run good
I have the Amsoil, stock box and 3.5 inch tube going out to the grill.
better than anything I ran over the last 150,000 miles

with LTTs setup and an Amsoil flat filter / stock box you'll be good

I'm looking to get as much power out of the engine as is possible for each particular modification, up to a point. Sure, the flat filter may be enough for a mostly stock motor to deal with, but what if the motor were built up to a point where it required more fuel and more air.

Mostly this is just me brainstorming and seeing what people think of it. I think if a motor were flashed, cammed, with headers and exhaust and a high flow throttle body, it would need more air than the flat filter could supply.

This is true but are you going to spend the thousands it will take to get to that point.
Maybe I should of said the best.

the original combo you describe will be able to provide more air than the 3.7L can use at any rpm even w/ a dirty filter. I have thought about messing w/ a cylindrical, enclosed filter housing, similar to ones used on Rovers for example, but the effort is not worth it as looking at those types of setups offer no advantage over a simple drop-in w/ extra cold air ducted to the stock box.

The K and N FIPK was a worthwhile upgrade IMHO. Didnt make the KJ any faster, but the acceleration is alot cleaner and throttle response is alot snappier. Youll never get great gains out of bolt ons for the 3.7l, but you can improve driveability with some minor mods. ~$500 in "go fast" parts and the jeep is truly different. Faster no.

The mods I did made the 3.7l fit my needs even better and added a nice engine and exhaust note for my cruising pleasure.

well.. i don't necessarily agree with the "even with a dirty filter" part JJ

however, even with the mentioned engine modifications the flat filter setup provides enough airflow to meet the airflow demands - and with the mentioned flat filter choice.. the air is actually clean

and since clean is the point, and there are no flow restrictions worth mentioning with the flat filter in question, and the stock airbox has been shown to provide the best airflow from numerous sources over aftermarket CAIs - the LTT with Tube or stock box modified for ram induction via the hood (which is very simple might I add if you don't mind cutting your hood..)

a conical within the stock box will provide at the most, adequate, dirtier, airflow


and.. Nothings WRRRRONNNG with the Army.. just haven't figured out exactly what you fellers are the BEST at yet

Actually you can run a 90% clogged air filter and get the same performance and mpg's as a brand new filter thanks to OBDII and all of those sensors it requires.

But I do agree with the last statement,and I've been in both services.

Occupying and doing all the things the other guys do best for a very long time

anyway... LTT sells an OUTSTANDING CAI that will do and out perform anything you have in mind for a fraction of the price.
