I am a new owner of a 2006 Liberty CRD. When I was doing my research on this vehicle I used this site for a lot of good information so I figured I would join up and be a part of the community as well as educate myself more on my little diesel.

I was looking for a new vehicle that could do some towing of my track car about 3-4 times a year, but would also not break the bank the 99% of the time that I am NOT towing. After looking at a lot of things I settled on the CRD. Sure, its not the ideal towing vehicle, but I wanted a real jack of all trades.

I am also a new Jeep owner (since the fall).
A word of caution regarding towing. I have a ~18' boat with a small block ford I/O drive, on a single axle trailer.

After I got my liberty, I was very interested in how it would tow my boat. The short answer is that it pulls the load better than my 99 CMC Sonoma with a 4.3Lit V6 BUT I am experiencing dangerous trailer sway at highway speeds. I have yet to sort this out and will wait for boating weather before getting into it. I will say that I experienced none of this with the Sonoma. I suspect the problem at least partially lies with the spongy Goodyear tires on the Lib. Even without the trailer, rocking the steering wheel at highway speeds produces tire walk (duck waddle). With the trailer, rocking the wheel even slightly starts a self sustaining oscillation that is close to non controllable. Be very careful here! When you hook up your trailer I would start testing at ~70Kph and move up SLOWLY. If you get any hint that a problem exists, STOP SLOWLY. Hard braking may enhance the wobble. I nearly doo doo when mine started and continued to worsen when I slowed. I had to accelerate and lock the wheel with my hand against my leg to sort it out.

Interesting, thanks for the warning and advice. I think I will get an anti-sway hitch to help that but I will certainly be taking it slow to start with so I can get a feel for its characteristics.
