Hey guys,

Finally bite the bullet and picked up a CRD. I was looking for a mid sized SUV/truck that had a decent towing capacity and the diesel instantly caught my eye.

I found this site and it looks like these things are a lot of fun. I doubt mine will see much in terms of off roading but the GDE tune and a few other small things will most likely find their way to calling my jeep home.

This vehicle is a complete change of direction compared to what I'm used to playing with (mostly Eagle Talons)

Hi,
Just joined because I'm trying to decide on buying a diesel Liberty. Right now, I have an indestructible 2000 Honda CRV, but am tempted by the diesel. Why did you buy? What are your expectations? Did you research the model before you bought. Any advice? Chrysler autos are not known for reliability long term, which is why I'm hesitating with the Liberty. The only diesels I own and drive are 2 Kubota tractors. I'd like your opinion on your purchase, if you'd care to give it.

Buying the diesel seemed like a no brainer for me. Originally I was looking at buying a diesel truck to haul my talon around (I race it at a couple of race tracks around here) but I only have room for 2 cars. Driving a truck 360 days a year so I can tow 5 days a year didn't make sense to me (I work in an office with a 100km commute daily). To top this off I live in a rural community and the roads in the winter are seldom plowed until all the main roads in town are done which sometimes with my previous cars has left me walking home with my car abandoned on the side of the road.

First impressions, being a car guy, its a nice change to drive something that sounds like it has an engine in it. While the diesel does make more noise than gas counter parts I do not find it an un welcomed one. Within the first 400km of me owning it the check engine light came on for the EGR and MAP sensor.

After getting the codes pulled I cleaned the MAP sensor (which looked like it had been sitting in tar for some time) and all is well since. Long term reliability... I'm not to overly concerned about, as long as you take care of it I do not see why it would fail unexpectedly. Once these issues have been addressed the jeep is a great vehicle.

As far as reliability, that is something that is hit and miss with any vehicle. You can always get a lemon no matter what the make or model. I can say, my 06 Lib. CRD I bought new in Dec. 05 has been extremely reliable. I've not only taken several cross country trips with it from AZ. but where I live and type of work I do, real estate appraiser in Mohave County AZ. I sometimes have to appraise or review a property many, many miles off paved road in the desert in mid July or Aug. when it can virtually be 120 degrees, driving through soft sand, harsh desert areas, washes in order to get where I need to get to. Reliability in this case of breakdown can be life and death situation within a couple of hours if you're not familiar with how to deal with it. I've been extremely pleased with my CRD. It has gotten me through some really tough spots in both hot summers and flash flood seasons. I have owned diesel autos since the old 74 Puegoet I had and the main factor is good maintenance schedule, oil changes and filters, clean fuel and filters, proper fluid levels, clean cooling system, good battery. I only plan on selling my Liberty if and when Jeep offers a diesel option in the Wrangler product. Other than that, with proper maintenance like above, the Libby should last me for another 170k miles.

MAP is for manifold absolute pressure - it tells the engine how much pressure the turbo is creating.

Don't know who to ask, but where do you buy your fuel? From all reports Sunoco Diesel Gold was the best; now their stations have been converted to Petro-Can (general opinion says theirs is not good fuel). So, where to buy?

I've been buying my fuel from petro can, its the closest station to my house that has diesel. I have ran a tank or 2 of shell's v-power but didn't notice any difference.
