Hi All,
I just picked up my first KJ yesterday. I bought it with a "bad motor". I am hoping it is just a bad head gasket and I can get it back to running condition with only top end work. I purchased a set of rockers/lifters and a timing belt kit since they were both on sale at ID Parts. I need to determine the correct head gasket before ordering that and some other essentials for the job.

I am not new to diesels as I currently own a WK CRD and a B5 Passat TDI. I have had several other TDIs over the years as well.

Glad to have access to this great resource for CRD's. I have followed TDIClub.com for years and it has proven to be invaluable.

Thanks,
Eric

As we all hope with you, friend!

Word to the wise, though, "only top end work" does not = inexpensive. Or simple.

But whatever it takes, you will get all the advice, camaraderie and more, that you can handle, here at LOST.

This is a link to the Jeep Factory Manuals on line,
They can be a big help in what you're about to undertake...

Thanks for the warm welcome WWDiesel and GordnadoCRD.
I finally pulled the head yesterday and found quite a bit of coolant/water in the cylinders that has festered into a science experiment looking mess. I am trying to decide if I should locate an engine that I can hear run rather than try to salvage this motor.
I am wondering if it is possible to remove the pistons by dropping the oil pan on this engine so I can hone these cylinders without pulling the bottom end.

Thanks,
Eric

How many miles are on the engine, and is there any rust on the liners? Also where about are you located? :)

The front axle and cradle get in the way of removing the pan.
It would be best to just pull the engine.

yes, surface rust on the liners. The engine has 148K miles. Located in GA north of Atlanta.
