Hello and welcome! But.... Volvo ... portals? Pretty sure I've never heard that reference before.
Please explain?
Thanks

Thank you!

Portal axles are those where wheel hub is not concentric with the axleshaft but with a certain offset that makes a greater clearance between ground and axle itself , in this way you get with a 37" tire , as much clearance as you would have with a 42" or maybe bigger tire.
The most famous are probably those mounted on Mercedes Unimogs, but in my opinion they're quite heavy and not very easy to match on a Jeep or 4x4, mine are Volvo's, not extremely strong but way lighter and easy to adapt on a Jeep vehicle for example.
Volvo's have stock vacuum actuated locker front and rear, low ring and pinion ratio (6:1) and drum brake from the factory, people use to do convert them to disc brakes as i did, i'll attach a couple of picture of my CJ-7:

OHHHH (Duh, sorry)
maybe it's the volvo part that threw me.
I"m familiar with those from the unimogs, also HummVees and even old Volkswagen 1 ton Transporters have a transaxle version of those.
Thanks for jogging my memory.

I always called them geared-hubs.
But yes, just like a SEE truck (Unimog) or M998 (Humvee).

Very familiar with them! Rebuilt bunches of VW's Type 2 transaxles in my career that had the outboard gear reduction portal axles on them.
Funny thing about them, axles turned in reverse compared to all other VW's, so you had to remember to put carrier assembly in on the opposite side of the transaxle housing to get the reverse rotation. :ROTFL:

This is what they looked like:
