Greetings fellow Jeepsters, Just purchased a 2005 Jeep Liberty CRD 2.8L Limited (Silver). Not sure what class Jeep this is but I think it's the KJ. Someone please verify this for me or let me know the right class. I will be a light user, I need 4x4 and low range to access my backyard, but am not very interested in off-road'n. At the same time I needed to upgrade my image from a 1991 Dodge Ram diesel and a 2003 Chevy S-10 pickup. This Liberty is the right choice. Got a couple issues I need to fix: howling rear end, bad turbo, 100,000 mile timing belt change, brake warning light, window washer not working (needed for safety check), cargo door doesn't always open, AC fan only works on high speed, one wheel air valve a little mushed. Otherwise, it's a nice Jeep. I do all my own maintenance so I've got a few weekends encumbered in the coming months. Glad to be in the group. Hope to hear from some new friends. Dean. |

Thanks for the warm welcome WWDiesel ! I did read the NOOB guide, then scanned it again from your prompt. From here, I will peruse the maintenance topics to find out about the Viscous Heater. I'm not having any problems, just curious about it's role on the engine. Dean. |

Less commonly referred to as auxiliary cabin heater. It provides increased heat to the heater core to aid defrost and comfort. Once coolant temp has reached a certain point, the clutch disengages and it just takes up space. Depending on your locale, this may or may not be helpful to you. Some here, have disconnected it. (disconnect the clutch wire connector) others have removed it completely, and converted to a shorter belt and different belt routing. |

If you are in warmer climate location which you seem to be in Hawaii you can pull the relay for the Viscous Heater and stick it in the glove box like many of us have done who live in southern or warmer climates. My relay has been removed for well over three years now with no issues. The relay is located in the power distribution center under the hood in front of the battery.... Some members have even gone so far as to totally remove the complete viscous heater system and installing a shorter serpentine belt...

Thanks WWDiesel, I had searched the regular Internet and it showed up in Heating and Air Conditioning segments. So this makes perfect sense. I'll look for the fuse, I certainly don't need it in the tropics. Dean. |

I'll look for the fuse, I certainly don't need it in the tropics. Dean. Very Important!!!! DO NOT PULL THE FUSE (no. 16), it also feeds control power to the AC relay circuit! Pull the relay labeled "CABIN HEATER RELAY" shown in the Power Distribution Panel diagram below, it is located under the hood just in front of the battery! Place the relay in your glove box or console and you can always plug it back in if needed if you have a cold front come through!
